Urban Island Renovation: Covelo House by spaceworkers
A contemporary renovation of Porto’s historic urban island homes, Covelo House balances preservation with modern design and spatial efficiency.
Preserving Porto’s Architectural Heritage with a Contemporary Touch
Urban islands have played a crucial role in the architectural history of Porto, Portugal. These compact, semi-detached homes, initially built in the 19th century, were meant to accommodate the influx of working-class families. Over time, these structures became overcrowded, leading to deteriorating living conditions. Despite efforts in the 1970s to replace them with modern housing, many urban islands remain, offering a glimpse into Porto’s past. The Covelo House, designed by spaceworkers, exemplifies the careful balance between preserving this historic fabric while incorporating modern design principles.

Reimagining a Compact Space with Modern Design
Covelo House is a thoughtful renovation project that transforms a traditional urban island dwelling into a functional, contemporary home. The original structure, measuring just four meters across and four meters deep, consists of two floors. The design team sought to maintain the integrity of the historical footprint while enhancing the space through innovative design solutions.

A Seamless Connection Between Old and New
The intervention carefully respects the existing structure, retaining its defining elements while introducing contemporary materials. The white-painted stone walls brighten the interiors, reflecting natural light and creating a sense of spaciousness. To contrast with the historical elements, sleek modern additions in black tones define new features, such as the staircase and entrance door, seamlessly blending past and present.

Optimizing Interior Space with Functional Design
One of the main challenges of renovating an urban island home is maximizing the limited space. The interior is structured into two levels, connected by a striking contemporary staircase that extends from the kitchen counter to the upper floor. The ground level features an open-plan living room and kitchen, punctuated by a large window that bathes the space in natural light.

Upstairs, the bedroom shares its area with a cleverly integrated bathroom hidden behind a mirrored volume. This reflective element not only conceals the bathroom but also enhances the perception of space, amplifying the light that enters through the windows.

Enhancing the Facade While Respecting Tradition
Externally, the renovation introduces subtle yet impactful changes. A bold black volume marks the entrance, standing in contrast with the original white-washed stone walls. New shutters in a striking contrasting color update the aesthetic without compromising the building’s historical identity. This careful approach ensures that the house retains its connection to the architectural language of Porto’s urban islands while embracing a new contemporary character.

A Model for Future Urban Island Renovations
Covelo House is more than a renovation; it is a model for how historic urban housing can be revitalized while preserving its cultural essence. By merging thoughtful design with practical functionality, spaceworkers have created a home that respects its past while offering a vision for the future of urban island renovations in Porto and beyond.
