VERTICAL CONNECTION
A COMPLEX BUILDING DESIGN WHICH IS HOSTING UNIVERSITY AND HOUSING
The project was developed as a solution to the problem of miscommunicatıon caused by skyscraper development. meeting-sharing environments are provided continuously on different floors in different blocks in the project, and the integrity and relationship between these spaces are strengthened and facilitated by bridge elements. the main concept is to consider integration and communication experimentally in a skyscraper site complex housing educational and living spaces.
The main idea on which the decisions made at the design base are based is to solve the functions (education-housing) as different blocks and relate them to each other at different elevations and to provide a continuous circulation of people in each area of this building complex. In the project, a large courtyard was created in the middle, along with the bridge connections passing through this courtyard at the upper elevations and the sphere structure that structurally holds on to these bridges, the social life in this courtyard also existed vertically. The sphere structure in the middle has been considered as an experimental approach with bridges, creating a formal existence that is also a factor in the formation of the form of buildings, as well as creating potential social spaces in areas where it intersects with bridges in itself.
Research has been conducted on many different developed countries for the context to be chosen for the mixed-use skyscraper architecture to be proposed. Research has been conducted on many issues such as university buildings in Singapore, urbanization near the central region where the study parcel is located, physical characteristics of the region, issues that have been scanned, etc. Apart from that skyscraper architecture, including the works of famous architects ( Zaha Hadid, Foster, and partners, Tom Wright) many skyscraper architecture plan-Section-3-D images were examined and information was obtained. The design of the form of the project was also inspired by the works of these famous architects. During the development of the scenario, theses and articles were also scanned on theories about how the concept of Higher Education will turn into a system in the future.
In the project, a gap was created by referencing the north-south axis, which is also the dominant wind direction, and this gap led to the formation of the project. The east-west axle is the design axle that allows the separation of the blocks. This created space is functional with landscape equipment on the ground floor and a 1-floor pit created in order to create a public-social life. The upper floors are provided by bridges linking educational and residential blocks. At the intersection of these bridges, there is a sphere construction, which creates potential spaces, becomes a focal point and center of socialization and gathering places. Bridges create social terraces on blocks by emptying them in blocks. Social life starts from the amphi pit and flows through the spaces(terraces) accompanied by the \'green\' environment to the upper elevations of the complex building.
Innovative and modern solutions as materials and systems have been produced in the project. There is a reinforced concrete elliptic core at the center of the blocks. These core and Steel flooring systems are connected to the steel truss system, which forms the amorphous facade and crosses the opening in the facade. Circular construction, located in the corner function as mega columns with a steel system. In the base part, located under the towers is a skeleton network system created with composite square cross-section columns and differs from the system used in the block. As a result, the whole system gets structural integrity together.
Many alternatives were considered until the latest design product was formed. However, the main concept and scenario have never changed since the beginning of the competition calendar. In this concept and scenario base, different alternatives have been tried on topics such as content, program, form search, relationship with the context, and the project has reached its final result as a result of an intensive period of work.
The main goal was to ensure that the proposal to be brought to the main concept thought for the project was different and innovative. In other words, pushing boundaries with an experimental approach and being driven to think and design more flexibly. However, decisions made in the direction of the relationship of mass with form, structure, program, and context were integrally resolved as a manifestation of this experimental approach.
It is believed that the project will inspire other potential projects to be carried out in the future. The innovative concept that it brought to skyscraper architecture and a mixed-use building proposal that houses education+ housing can serve as a touchstone in the design fiction of future vertical urban architecture. this main concept, brought about by the fact that social life and unity exist vertically without breaking away, can create a new definition of potential cities in the future.
