RE-INHABITING THE CENTER: Reuse and Revitalization of a block on tenth street

The design strategy is the reuse of heritage and the conformation of the block with a new building. What brings as a consequence the reading and understanding of modernity and the transition towards an architecture aware of contemporary needs.

We very positivly value the concept of conecting to the city but the relation of this conections with the central space is not valued enough.

The Funnel

A new approach to challenge the hermetic and isolated penitentiary institution, catered to both users, the offenders and the general public. Its physical layout is designed to gather said groups together and give each other the chance to undergo transition via functional programs namely reflect, reform, reform, reintegrate and reborn.

All Cart

BICYCART is a cart designed for China's post covid-19 era which constitutes a new design by deconstructing and reorganizing the existing waste materials. The modular design ensures the high customization, high mobility and high flexibility of the cart. The main material of the cart is reconstructed from the widely abandoned sharing bike-Mobike in China, whic

The overall concept of reusing and recycling waste into something that addresses the current situation to start commerce and protect the environment is really good. I would encourage the team to study the actual building of it more carefully and develop that to further this. It could resolve the issue for a large community as movable markets and not permanent structures. Especially the modularity of the design.

The idea of recycling discarded products is wonderful. I enjoyed seeing the components of the cycle and the traditional cart laid out. But the presentation does not sufficiently explain how these components are put together and how appropriate cycles may be for such an afterlife. The proposal does not also show how the roofs are assembled. Most importantly the possibility of moving these carts around seems limited.

An intersting piece of sculptural urban furniture. It would be good to learn a little more about the internal structure, how it is meant to be put together and what kind of finishing it will have. That would help us get a better idea of the final piece.

Upgrade

Upgrade is a compact, fold-able, lightweight solution to make commuting more comfortable. Attached to vertical handrails on public transport it creates a personal seat. Hooking the strap to the overhead handrails transforms it into a swing seat. Upgrade can also be used as a free standing short or tall stool or as a multi-use surface.

Really good effort to integrate so many components. The team should go further in making this really cost effective and also test the ease of riding this around while being seated behind the display and storage unit.

There are so many lovely ideas in this proposal - the collapsible baskets and storage of these, the rails for additional display above, the retractable roof, the solar powered USB charger point, the app (which has been developed here in India (in a few cities) too). The drawings are clear. There are some fundamental challenges with regards to riding the cart around - visibility and manoeuvrability is going to be tough with the front of the cart out of view and the curving metal sheet behind the rider (the bananas will get in the way too!) . And good luck going up hill or turning sharp corners with the heavy load up front. Some of the details too need attention - the back end of the cantilevered metal hangers for the baskets is flimsy. One should also consider alternate materials (instead of the metal sheet) and the stacking/parking of multiple such carts.

The circle is the main geometric form of the project and the single module that is multiplied to form the various spaces and functions are fundamental elements that recall the concept of sisterhood and unity in the face of life and overcoming difficulties through solidarity and mutual help.

A well thought design but I find the concept of the eye to be too literal

The formal forcefulness gives a good definition in the communal relations but limits the possibilities of a greater architectural and spatial richness.

META-BIN

Our design concept is based on the Japanese metabolism system, with a modular desigprefabricated in the factory and assembled to meet the needs of the site. The transportation of prefabricated components from the factory and the citizen participation in the assembly process, the replacement of damaged single components, all reduce the waste of resources.

RE-DIRECTION

Creating a vibrant mixed-use / corrections hybrid program, this project seeks to empower self-directed achievement and to provide vital resources to the cyber job-market and community organisations. By attracting a mixed group of people, this facility acts as social catalyst to break down stigmas associated with incarceration.

Nicole Biewenga

I hear you! We had debated about how the mass should meet the ground plane, whether through landscaping or architectural intervention... we landed on embracing the idea implied by the brief "As the design is considered as a replicable model, participants can create a prison design that is free from the model site first and then place it here... From this we decided to adopt the attitude that we would bring connection to nature inside the building via atrium and accessible green roofs, while distancing ourselves from a connection to location. A debatable stance, to be sure, but one we felt a natural outcome of the brief.

Nicole Biewenga

I would consider it a good thing that the accommodations themselves are not punishing - our intention is to create a gradient of limitations to the freedom to leave the facility, and to foster productive growth while a resident - but that these stipulations alone be the approach to rehabilitation.
