Two Decades of Redefining Design Boundaries with Design x Design
The Evolution of a Movement Changing How We Think About Design - The Evolution of a Movement Changing How We Think About Design
The Origin Story: What is Design x Design?
For over a decade, Design x Design has been more than just a design initiative; it has been a melting pot of revolutionary ideas, social engagement, and interdisciplinary exploration. What started as a quest to deepen the roots of design dialogue and consciousness has evolved into a platform that unapologetically challenges traditional design paradigms. With years of sustained commitment, it has emerged as a vital hub for designers from multiple domains to engage in meaningful conversations, showcase their portfolios, and most importantly, disrupt the status quo.
Over the years, it has expanded its repertoire, introducing various modes of engagement like Exposé, Roundtable, and highly impactful design competitions. The initiative's legacy is not just in the design solutions it has fostered but in the connections it has built across the global and local design communities. Each year, it amplifies its impact, ensuring that design is recognized not just as an aesthetic endeavor but as a powerful tool for societal change. This twenty-year journey has been nothing short of transformative, making Design x Design not just a platform but an institution in itself.
Design in its many manifestations forms an integral part of every culture. Civilizations evolve and attain their full potential because of it.

First Edition of DxD Competitions: "Mobitecture"
The inaugural exhibition, themed "Mobitecture," was nothing short of groundbreaking. It questioned the very foundations of human habitat, evoking our nomadic instincts and challenging designers to think about habitats that could move and adapt. Winner "2121: A Sky Nomads" didn't just meet this challenge; it soared above it. Set in a utopian scenario for the year 2121 after Earth's Geomagnetic Reversal, the project proposed an advanced aircraft designed to replenish atmospheric oxygen levels, offering a visionary take on the future of mobile habitats.

The Sequel: "Rise, Resist, Remember"
The second edition shifted focus to the social and political act of protest. Themed "Rise, Resist, Remember," the exhibition invited designers to think about the spaces and symbols of protest. Notable entries included "Protest Drama," which examined the Anti-Extradition movement in Hong Kong, and "Gwadar Protest," aimed at uplifting local communities through architecture.

A Look Back: Memorable Entries
- Mobitecture:
- "Armadicar": A mobile habitat inspired by the armadillo, aimed to provide an adaptive dwelling.
- "HELIOS": A concept that explored solar-powered mobility. - Rise, Resist, Remember:
- "LifeCycle": Addressing the water crisis through modern and traditional collaborative methods.
- "The Eternal Independence": An installation that embodied the act of protest by occupying space and drawing attention.
