Cafe Renovation in Ubon Old Town: 115 Bake House & JIM’s Recipe by Sutearchitect
This article explores the transformation of a historic building into 115 Bake House & JIM's Recipe, blending tradition and modernity.
Nestled in the heart of Ubon Old Town, 115 Bake House & JIM's Recipe is an architectural marvel that blends heritage and modernity. Designed by Sutearchitect, this project transformed a 60-year-old commercial building into a dual-function space, housing a cozy café on the ground floor and an elegant Japanese restaurant on the upper level. The renovation reimagines traditional Thai shophouse architecture, creating a vibrant and inviting environment for patrons.

A Historic Foundation for Contemporary Design
The original structure of the building embodied the characteristics of a typical shophouse: enclosed spaces with minimal natural light and a functional, utilitarian aesthetic. Sutearchitect’s challenge was to preserve the building’s historical character while redefining its purpose. The resulting design masterfully balances the charm of the old with the needs of a modern café and restaurant.

Bringing in Natural Light
One of the key interventions was the removal of the second-floor rear balcony, which had been used as a laundry area. This change created a vertical void that opened up the space to the sky, introducing an abundance of natural light into the once dark interiors. The addition of a small garden at the rear further enhances the connection between the building and nature, offering a tranquil atmosphere for visitors.

Loft-Style Design: A Blend of Old and New
The renovation incorporates a loft-style design, highlighting the building’s original textures and materials while infusing it with contemporary elements. Exposed brick walls, industrial accents, and wooden finishes preserve the structure's historic essence. These elements are harmoniously combined with modern touches, such as clean lines and open layouts, creating a fresh and engaging aesthetic.

A Dual-Function Space
115 Bake House & JIM's Recipe is a testament to thoughtful spatial planning. The ground floor operates as a café, offering a selection of coffee and homemade bakery items in a warm and inviting setting. Upstairs, the Japanese restaurant provides a contrasting yet complementary experience, with its elegant interiors and intimate dining spaces. Together, these two functions create a versatile environment that caters to a variety of customer preferences.

Revitalizing Ubon Old Town
This renovation project not only breathes new life into a historic building but also contributes to the cultural and architectural revival of Ubon Old Town. By preserving the structure’s historical identity while adapting it for contemporary use, Sutearchitect has created a space that respects its past and embraces the future.

115 Bake House & JIM's Recipe stands as an inspiring example of how traditional architecture can be transformed to meet modern demands without losing its essence. With its harmonious blend of heritage and innovation, the project offers a unique and memorable experience for all who visit.
