2 Courtyard House by Robertson Design – A Modern Residential Landmark in Houston
2 Courtyard House in Houston by Robertson Design features dual courtyards, dramatic cantilever, and minimalist concrete façade enhancing privacy and spatial fluidity.
Located in Houston, Texas, 2 Courtyard House by Robertson Design redefines suburban living through bold spatial concepts, structural innovation, and an emphasis on privacy. Completed in 2017, the 4,200 m² residence is distinguished by two defining architectural gestures: a dramatic 35-foot cantilevered second floor and a dual courtyard layout that replaces the traditional suburban backyard.

Architectural Concept
The home’s design was shaped by three primary goals: ensuring privacy for the residents, optimizing the irregular pie-shaped lot, and avoiding a façade dominated by a garage door. Robertson Design responded with a layered architectural composition, creating both functional efficiency and a refined entry sequence that elevates the residential experience.

Spatial Organization
The house is formed by two rectangular volumes connected by a glazed passage. This corridor, acting as both threshold and transitional space, divides the two courtyards and blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior.
- Public Spaces: The single-story eastern volume accommodates communal areas including living, dining, and kitchen spaces.
- Private Spaces: The two-story western volume houses bedrooms and private quarters, with the cantilevered structure maximizing usable floor area while preserving circulation for the side-facing garage.

Entry Experience
Arrival at the residence is carefully choreographed. Visitors pass under the cantilever into a concrete-walled courtyard, then continue through the glazed hallway that frames views of both courtyards. The entryway is intentionally designed to feel ambiguous—its continuous materials and ceiling plane merge the interior and exterior, heightening the sense of spatial fluidity.

Materials & Details
The project utilizes a concrete façade system (öko skin by Rieder Facades), paired with premium fixtures from Miele, Delta Light, Hevi-Lite, and RAM Windows. The restrained material palette enhances the home’s monolithic presence while supporting a clean, minimalist aesthetic.

Design Significance
2 Courtyard House demonstrates how thoughtful residential architecture can transform suburban constraints into opportunities for design innovation. By integrating privacy, functionality, and striking form, Robertson Design delivers a home that is both architecturally compelling and deeply livable.
