A-Building: Redefining Irregular Plot Architecture by LIFE Architects
A-Building by LIFE Architects showcases innovative architectural solutions for acute-angled urban plots, blending functionality and aesthetic creativity.
Located in Sungsudong 1, Seongdong-gu, South Korea, A-Building by LIFE Architects stands as an innovative solution to the challenges posed by irregular acute-angled plots. Designed by lead architects Jeeyoung Han and Sooyong Hwang, the 356 m² structure was completed in 2021 and demonstrates how architectural ingenuity can transform unconventional sites into functional, aesthetically compelling spaces. With one basement level and ten above-ground floors, the building integrates sharp geometry and efficient space utilization to create a dynamic presence in its urban surroundings.

Site and Design Challenges
The acute-angled plot, while compact and unique, presented significant design constraints. The primary objective was to maximize the efficiency of the small-scale site while ensuring functional use of its sharp angles. The sharp geometry of the plot was reflected directly onto the building’s façade, creating visually striking forms that align with the surrounding urban context. These acute angles, instead of being obstacles, became the defining feature of the building’s aesthetic and structural identity.

The floor area ratio of 400% required creative problem-solving, particularly regarding parking. By reconfiguring the original CIP (Cast In Place Pile) layout, additional space was secured for a mechanical parking system. The parking entrance, dubbed the “Boa Snake,” adds an element of playful ingenuity. This entrance transitions vehicles into a sequence of ramps and stair landings, seamlessly connecting parking areas with the multifunctional first-floor space.

Dynamic Façade Design
A-Building’s façade is a testament to the synergy between form and function. Vertical and horizontal elements align with the plot’s diagonal geometry, creating a dynamic interplay of light, shadow, and depth throughout the day. This shifting visual effect offers observers a unique experience depending on the time of day and angle of observation.

Laminated ceramic tiles were selected for the façade, providing a seamless, sleek appearance while adding texture and character. These tiles enhance the dynamic aesthetic of the exterior and emphasize the continuity between the building’s levels.

Integration of Space and Function
The acute angles of the plot could have resulted in unusable interior spaces, but LIFE Architects embraced these challenges to create rational, functional solutions. The extended façade not only highlights the building’s dynamic form but also maximizes interior usability.

The first floor, currently functioning as a showroom for a fashion company and a venue for pop-up events, showcases the adaptability of the building’s design. The integration of functional spaces within the angular constraints of the plot demonstrates how architecture can merge creativity with practicality.

Balancing Urban Context and Accessibility
To address the partial encroachment of adjacent roads onto the site, portions of the façade were adjusted for improved accessibility. The stair façade and columns were modified, and staircases were suspended using tension rods to maintain structural integrity while minimizing disruption. This thoughtful approach harmonizes the building with its urban surroundings, emphasizing accessibility and integration.

A Vision of Architectural Innovation
A-Building by LIFE Architects redefines what is possible on challenging urban sites. By embracing the unique geometry of an acute-angled plot, the architects have created a structure that not only meets functional demands but also elevates the aesthetic experience. The dynamic façade, efficient space planning, and creative integration of urban and architectural elements make A-Building a pioneering example of innovative architecture for irregular plot design.
