Announcing the 2022 Dedalo Minosse International Prize Winners
Celebrating Innovative and Sustainable Architecture Designs from Around the Globe
On Friday, September 16th, the recipients of the XII Dedalo Minosse International Prize for Commissioning a Building were revealed in the stunning Teatro Olimpico located in Vicenza, Italy. This edition of the prize was especially significant as it aligned with its 25th anniversary since its inception.
“It’s extremely exciting and a great honour – states the directress of the Prize Marcella Gabbiani – to see how the international relevance of this event has grown through the years in spite of pandemics, wars and international economic crises.
This demonstrates how architecture, just like music, is a universal language that knows no boundaries nor political barriers, through which professionals, clients and people who are into architecture from all around the world can communicate with each other and recognize themselves as the most authentic form of true beauty and quality of life.
And it’s with this deeply rooted motivation that we already began planning the Italian and international tour that will expose the works awarded in this 12th edition of the Prize in the most iconic, representative and rich in history places of the world.”
The night kicked off with an electrifying awards ceremony at the bustling Teatro Olimpico, emceed by Giorgio Tartaro, who enthusiastically summoned the elated victors to the stage.
Following the awarding ceremony, the Multimedia Exhibition was unveiled at the nearby Palladian Basilica, showcasing graphic tables, models, videos, and installations that explore over 60 different approaches to architecture.
The exhibit features work from both clients and awarded architects recommended by the Jury and will be on display until October 2nd. Alongside the exhibition, the Basilica will host the Forum of the Clients, including seminars, conferences, and workshops for professionals, entrepreneurs, and architecture enthusiasts. As with previous editions of the Prize, Fortunato D'Amico's Collateral Art exhibition titled "Art and Architecture between Nature and Artifice" will examine the relationship between humans and nature. The exhibit will feature contributions from prominent artists such as Raymundo Sesma, Duilio Forte e Daniela Pellegrini, Paolo Tofani, and Max Marra.
The international jury bestowed four Institutional Prizes, eight Special Prizes awarded by Institutions and Partners, and 13 special mentions. The four Institutional Prizes include the International Prize Dedalo Minosse, given to a client who commissioned a freelance architect from any country; the International Prize Dedalo Minosse - Under 40, sponsored by OCCAM and given to a client who commissioned a young freelance architect from any country; the ALA-Assoarchitetti Foundation Inarcassa Prize, given to a client from any country who commissioned an Italian freelance architect; and the ALA-Assoarchitetti Prize - Under 40, given to a client from any country who commissioned a young Italian freelance architect.
The International Prize Dedalo Minosse for commissioning a building 2022 has been awarded to J.S.T. Connector, Atsuhiro Nishimoto, a leading Japanese company, for the realization of “SWALES / J.S.T. Harrisburg Production Engineering Center”, conceived and designed by Ryuichi Ashizawa Architects & Associates, built-in 2021 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA.
“J.S.T. Connector” is a Japanese company, a leader in the market of connectors, with an important history of attention to architecture and that always cared about its employees’ physical and mental health and about the environment.
In this project, in an industrial area of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the client expressed his desire to recreate the Japanese sense of harmony while paying tribute to Native Americans, designed for everyday life, but also for future generations. These goals altogether created three “guide dialogues” of the project: between past and future, human beings and natural kingdom, and Japanese and American culture.
The site had hard and dry soil, that only dispersed rainwater on the surface. The architecture was conceived as part of the water circulation system, which know permeates from the roof to the soil, through the “Swales” (wet basins).
Once the goal of reaching harmony was set, the project of the productive building was able to change significantly the natural environment and people’s awareness. Swales have raised the soil’s humidity level and because of that trees started growing and many creatures spontaneously moved into the forest that surrounds the area, where they started to reproduce. The personnel learned to use energy more consciously. That’s how design has looked after the environment, with rainwater permeating the earth, pointing to the future of the industry.
With climate change, also the ideas of designers and engineers adapt to the environment: “Nature expanding before our eyes gives us excellent suggestions”.
