A revitalizing architectural intervention in the heart of Bogotá, the Library and Auditorium at Jorge Tadeo Lozano University, designed by Bermúdez Arquitectos, stands as a modern classic of Colombian architecture. This ambitious project redefines the relationship between the university and the city, transforming a once-neglected industrial-residential zone into an open, accessible, and vibrant public campus.

The design envisions a dual-purpose building and public plaza that work together to integrate the academic community with the urban center. The structure’s footprint is the result of overlaying two square volumes—one measuring 47 meters and the other 40 meters—forming a continuous, covered walkway that frames the perimeter at street level. This circulation space activates the urban edge, enhancing pedestrian connectivity and encouraging social interaction.

Urban Integration Through Form and Function

Rising 30 meters high, the building spans four generous floors, with floor-to-ceiling heights varying from 3.4 to 6.1 meters, ensuring spatial generosity and natural ventilation. The building’s most transparent and welcoming face is oriented toward the northeast, offering panoramic views of the iconic Monserrate Hill. This strategic orientation not only frames a dramatic natural backdrop but also floods the interiors with morning light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.

Conversely, the southern and western façades are intentionally solid and closed-off—shielding the interiors from Bogotá’s harsh afternoon sun and filtering out urban noise from the neighboring deteriorated blocks. These decisions reflect a deliberate and climate-responsive approach to façade design, blending sustainability with architectural expression.

Auditorium: Acoustics Engineered for Versatility

On the ground floor, the auditorium is engineered for acoustic excellence. Suitable for symphonic and chamber music performances, academic events, and public gatherings, the space features adjustable acoustic elements, including tempered glass deflectors and modular volumes. These features allow for precise control over reverberation, ensuring optimal sound quality for a variety of programming needs.

Library: A Spatial Narrative of Light and Learning

The open-concept library spans the third and fourth floors, unified by a sculptural staircase and a generous void at the building’s northeast corner. Here, natural light is masterfully introduced via a system of skylights and indirect openings, maintaining visual comfort and eliminating glare in reading areas. The spatial strategy emphasizes openness, flexibility, and visual continuity, supporting both individual study and collaborative learning.

Structure as Architecture

Each floorplate measures 2,200 square meters and is supported by nine monumental structural elements, each shaped as a square with 3.60-meter sides. These elements span 15 meters and cantilever an additional 3.5 meters, providing both structural clarity and architectural drama. They also serve practical purposes—housing meeting spaces, vertical ducts, and mechanical rooms—demonstrating a seamless integration of infrastructure and design.

A Model for Educational and Urban Renewal

This project is more than a campus expansion—it’s a strategic urban intervention that revives a neglected district, bridges institutional boundaries, and redefines how architecture can foster civic engagement. Bermúdez Arquitectos has crafted not only a functional academic facility but also a public space that resonates with Bogotá’s cultural and environmental context.
