Located in Kaufbeuren, Germany, the Artist’s Atelier & Home designed by Stadtmüller.Burkhardt.Graf.Architekten is a striking example of contemporary residential and studio architecture that merges creativity, functionality, and sustainability. Completed in 2021 with a total area of 230 m², this project was envisioned as both a family residence and a working studio for a freelance artist and sculptor.

Site & Context

The building is positioned on the western ridge of the Wertachtal, forming a topographical transition between the urban valley and the historic military site of the Fliegerhorst plateau. With its orientation perpendicular to the steep slope, the two-story volume partially embeds itself into the landscape, creating a strong dialogue between architecture and terrain.

Spatial Organization

  • Upper Level (Street Access): The main entrance leads directly into the spacious atelier, designed to accommodate large-scale artworks. A double-height western façade gate allows raw materials like stone blocks and timber trunks to be moved seamlessly into the workspace.
  • Lower Level (Private Residence): Below the studio lies the family’s private living spaces. The design centers on the Allraum – a generous open-plan zone for cooking, dining, and living. This communal space is framed by bedrooms, bathrooms, and utility rooms, ensuring privacy while fostering togetherness. The fully glazed eastern façade provides uninterrupted panoramic views across Kaufbeuren, filling both the studio and living areas with natural light.

Materials & Construction

The project embraces a minimalist yet robust construction system to allow the clients’ direct involvement in the building process.

  • Structure: Reinforced concrete supports the home against the challenging terrain.
  • Roof: Built using the Zollinger construction technique, traditionally applied to hall structures, it utilizes prefabricated small wooden elements for efficiency.
  • Façade & Cladding: Both the façade and roof are wrapped in corrugated metal sheets, giving the house a raw, industrial aesthetic while ensuring durability.

This modular and low-tech construction enabled the owners to participate in the assembly, reducing costs and strengthening the connection between the clients and their home.

Design Philosophy

The Artist’s Atelier & Home embodies a sustainable, cost-effective, and collaborative design approach. By combining simple materials, self-build techniques, and a clear spatial hierarchy, the project achieves both architectural clarity and emotional resonance. It serves as a creative retreat, a functional studio, and a warm family home, reflecting the artistic lifestyle of its inhabitants.
