Reimagining Urban Apartment Living Through Light, Flow, and Function

Located in the iconic Asa Sul neighborhood of Brasília, the Aurora Apartment by CoDA Arquitetura is a striking example of modern residential renovation. Spanning 188 square meters, this thoughtfully redesigned apartment responds to two primary challenges: enhancing natural light and transforming a fragmented layout into a cohesive and functional living environment.

Embracing Natural Light and Expanding Spatial Flow

The first impression upon entering the apartment is defined by the dramatic natural light pouring in through expansive 9.5-meter-wide windows in the living room—an architectural feature that frames the living space in warmth and openness. However, the existing kitchen remained isolated and dimly lit, separated from the social core of the home.

In contrast, circulation was hindered by a narrow 78 cm hallway, constrained by the original structural framework composed of three parallel concrete walls—two outlining the apartment’s boundaries and one central wall that bisected the floor plan, dividing social areas from private spaces.

A Strategic and Structural Intervention

To create a fluid and welcoming home, CoDA Arquitetura undertook a strategic structural intervention. The team expanded the narrow central passageway, enabling seamless circulation between the bedrooms, kitchen, and service areas—without needing to cross the main living room.

To achieve this, two parallel support beams were identified as opportunities for transformation. Below one beam, a custom wood panel was installed with two sliding doors: one opens the kitchen to the social areas, while the other provides discreet access between private and service zones.

Kitchen as the New Heart of the Home

At the center of the kitchen renovation is a 4.5-meter-long kitchen island that defines the space with elegance and practicality. Its cantilevered design—with bulged edges and a recessed concrete base—gives it a visual lightness, enhancing the feeling of openness and modernity.

By integrating the kitchen into the main living space, natural light now floods the once-dark area, and the home gains a unified social core ideal for hosting family and friends.

Intimate Spaces with Purpose

The private area of the apartment was also carefully reimagined. Each bedroom and guest space now includes dedicated study zones, maximizing the utility of every square meter. The use of warm materials—natural wood, exposed concrete, and soft neutral finishes—creates an atmosphere of serenity and comfort, enhancing the cozy ambiance desired by the residents.

Material Palette: Raw and Refined

Balancing the raw character of exposed concrete with the natural warmth of wood, the design embraces a minimalist yet tactile aesthetic. The carefully selected material palette—featuring Freijó wood, Granito Branco Nevasca countertops, and curated furniture from Acervo Mobília—reflects a subtle elegance and modern Brazilian design ethos.

The Aurora Apartment renovation is a compelling example of how smart architectural interventions and material sensitivity can overcome structural limitations and transform a rigid layout into a light-filled, flexible, and welcoming home. With a focus on spatial continuity, natural light, and personal comfort, CoDA Arquitetura redefines urban apartment living in Brazil’s capital.
