Barbara Bar and Restaurant by 89 stopni – Warsaw’s Unique Cocktail Destination
Barbara Bar and Restaurant in Warsaw blends industrial charm, vintage design, and Italian trattoria vibes, offering unique bar and dining experiences.
A Vision Born from History
Barbara Bar and Restaurant, designed by 89 stopni, is a transformative hospitality project in the heart of Warsaw. During the initial visit to the abandoned venue, once a tailor’s workshop, the architects were struck by the raw, industrial charm of the space. Scattered racks and remnants of past activity created an authentic atmosphere—something modern buildings rarely capture. Inspired by this unique aura, the design team committed to preserving the spirit of the place while introducing a modern, immersive dining and bar experience.
The investors requested a cocktail bar adjacent to Bibenda, one of Warsaw’s most celebrated restaurants. Rather than creating a simple extension, 89 stopni envisioned a standalone bar and restaurant that could captivate guests independently, delivering an unforgettable experience. After months of detailed planning and collaborative design, Barbara Bar and Restaurant came to life, combining historical respect with contemporary elegance.

A Space with Character
The design journey was iterative, evolving to reveal the true identity of Barbara. The architects sought to create a venue that would fill the void in the old townhouse, making it feel like it had always been part of the city. Designed for morning brews, brunches, full-course dinners, and late-night cocktails, Barbara caters to diverse dining experiences.
Sunlight plays a pivotal role in shaping the venue’s atmosphere. With its south-east corner exposure, natural light bathes the interior, subtly transforming it throughout the day. This guiding principle led to the careful division of the space into two main areas: the bar and the restaurant, each offering a distinct ambiance.

Lighting and Atmosphere
As dusk falls, Barbara transforms with jewel-like lighting, including handpicked vintage sconces that evoke a romantic aura reminiscent of Italian trattorias. Semi-transparent, milky curtains diffuse sunlight, softening the industrial plaster walls and creating a warm, inviting environment. The interior design blends industrial textures with refined finishes, capturing the essence of Warsaw while hinting at the sunny charm of Neapolitan cafés.

Two Bars, One Unique Experience
Barbara’s centerpiece is its round, decorative bar adorned with a green-and-rust stone countertop and crowned by a sleek metal frame with subtle curtain accents. Guests are invited to sit on second-hand stools sourced and curated for their character. Behind the main bar, a lower bar mirrors the design, while a cozy hidden nook offers an intimate retreat.
Every detail, from the brick-red curtains at the entrance to the carefully chosen furnishings, reinforces the venue’s unique identity, blending heritage elements with modern craftsmanship.

Hidden Restaurant and Signature Design
The hidden restaurant is accessed through a mysterious wooden portal framed by a glass block wall. Inside, marble tables and vintage hazelnut chairs stand on a one-of-a-kind recycled marble floor, handpicked with the investors to harmonize with the townhouse’s original architecture.
A mosaic on the central wall, created by Magdalena Łapińska-Rozenbaum, depicts Barbara herself—cheerful, nostalgic, and full of life. This artistic centerpiece pays homage to communist-era Poland’s glass décor traditions while complementing the new-but-vintage flooring, creating a timeless atmosphere.

A Living Legacy
Bringing Barbara to life required a blend of creative vision and technical expertise. Its success reflects the collaborative effort of architects, investors, and artisans. Today, Barbara Bar and Restaurant continues to evolve, shaped by the guests who fill it from dawn to late night, establishing it as a must-visit culinary and social destination in Warsaw.
