BaseCamp Wrocław by Grupa 5 Architekci: Revitalizing Heritage Through Contemporary Student Living
BaseCamp Wrocław by Grupa 5 Architekci blends historic preservation with modern student housing, creating vibrant community-driven urban living.
BaseCamp Wrocław, designed by the acclaimed architectural practice Grupa 5 Architekci, is a striking example of how modern student housing can harmoniously coexist with architectural heritage. Completed in 2022, the 45,300 m² projecttransforms the historic site of the former Zakłady Piekarsko-Ciastkarskie “Mamut” (Bakery and Pastry Plant) into a vibrant student hostel and hotel complex at the heart of Wrocław, Poland.

Preserving History, Designing for the Future
The architectural vision of Grupa 5 Architekci was not just to repurpose old industrial structures, but to weave them into a new urban fabric. The development revitalizes two preserved landmarks:

- The Flour Warehouse (Magazyn Mąki) on H. Sienkiewicza Street
- The Bakery (Piekarnia) located within the interior of the plot
Both structures, protected under historic preservation, were carefully adapted into student living spaces while maintaining their industrial character. These historic volumes are complemented by newly constructed wings that complete the city block, balancing heritage with modernity.

Architectural Layout and Program
The masterplan integrates student housing, hotel accommodations, and community spaces, offering a multifunctional urban hub:
- 775 student rooms with a variety of layouts
- 240 hotel rooms for short-term stays
- Two retail spaces at ground level, including a café in the historic Flour Warehouse and a fitness club in the eastern wing
- Underground levels with parking, auxiliary functions, and technical infrastructure

The seven-story wings host both student and hotel rooms, while the preserved industrial buildings accommodate community areas and common lounges that encourage social interaction.

Interior Design and Experience
The interior design, led by Aisslinger Studio, embraces the industrial DNA of the site while introducing vibrant, youthful elements tailored to the student lifestyle. High ceilings, exposed beams, and historic brick walls are softened by contemporary furniture, warm lighting, and flexible layouts.

The main entrance—located on H. Sienkiewicza Street—welcomes residents into a grand lobby set within the former unloading hall of the Flour Warehouse, highlighting the building’s historical structure while setting the tone for a dynamic, student-focused environment.

Urban and Social Impact
BaseCamp Wrocław is more than just a student hostel—it is an urban regeneration project that redefines community living in the city center. By restoring and reactivating the former bakery complex, the architects not only preserved Wrocław’s architectural heritage but also created a new cultural landmark for students, travelers, and locals alike.
The mix of long-term student housing and short-term hotel accommodations ensures a diverse, international community, contributing to Wrocław’s identity as a growing academic and cultural hub.
