Bat Trang Ceramic Community House by 1+1>2 Architects: A Tribute to Vietnam’s Pottery Heritage
Bat Trang Ceramic Community House blends traditional pottery craftsmanship with modern architecture, preserving Vietnam’s heritage through sustainable, community-focused design.
The Bat Trang Ceramic Community House, designed by 1+1>2 Architects, is a landmark project celebrating the rich legacy of Bat Trang, Vietnam’s renowned pottery village. Completed in 2021 after three years of meticulous construction, this 3380 m² mixed-use community center serves as a cultural hub dedicated to preserving and promoting the craft of pottery, which has flourished for over 500 years.

A Vision for Cultural and Urban Revitalization
Located at the gateway of Bat Trang Village, the Community House overlooks the Bac Hung Hai Canal, offering a vital connection to the Red River. The architectural design prioritizes sustainable urban planning, controlling building density and height to harmonize with the surrounding landscape. By reinvigorating the once-thriving canal-side pottery market, the project contributes to the region’s economic and cultural revival.

Inspired by Tradition: Architectural Concept
The five-story structure is a striking fusion of traditional pottery techniques and contemporary design. Inspired by the dynamic movement of a ceramic artisan shaping clay, the building is formed by seven interlocking ceramic wheels, creating a fluid yet functional layout. The structure also recalls the imagery of Bat Trang’s historic gourd-shaped kilns, blending modern innovation with heritage.
Each curve of the building is not merely aesthetic but also serves a purpose—integrated ceramic shelves display handcrafted pottery, while staircases seamlessly connect the different floors. The fluid form enhances natural ventilation, lighting, and spatial flexibility, making the building a living embodiment of vernacular architecture adapted for modern use.

Materials: Honoring Craftsmanship and Sustainability
The reddish-brown hues of the building reflect the earthy tones of raw ceramics, reinforcing its connection to Bat Trang’s identity. The primary materials—Bat Trang bricks and tiles—are locally sourced, reinforcing sustainable construction practices while celebrating indigenous craftsmanship.
The project was realized with contributions from leading manufacturers such as Dulux, INAX, Philips, LG Air Conditioners, Trane Technologies, and Xingfa, ensuring high-quality execution.

A Center for Community and Creativity
Beyond its architectural brilliance, the Bat Trang Ceramic Community House functions as a multifunctional cultural hub. It hosts exhibitions, workshops, and events, fostering dialogue between artisans, designers, and visitors. As part of the larger initiative, "The Center for Quintessence of the Vietnamese Craft Village," it plays a pivotal role in sustaining and evolving Vietnam’s pottery traditions.
With an investment of 150 billion VND, this project stands as a symbol of heritage conservation and urban renewal, proving that architecture can bridge tradition and modernity while strengthening cultural identity.
