A Home Designed for Connection with Nature

Situated on the edge of a lush orchard in the tranquil Calera de Tango, this contemporary single-family residence is a testament to thoughtful architectural planning. Designed to embrace the surrounding landscape, the house is oriented to maximize northern light while offering uninterrupted views of the adjacent plantation, Cerro Chena, and the Andes mountain range.

The architectural layout follows a linear "bar" organization, where the northern-facing side houses the primary living spaces, ensuring optimal daylight penetration and scenic vistas. In contrast, the southern façade accommodates essential service areas, including the kitchen, bathrooms, walk-in closet, utility room, and storage facilities. This strategic zoning not only enhances functionality but also reinforces passive climate control.

Functional Zoning and Spatial Continuity

The home's layout transitions from private to public spaces along its north axis. Bedrooms are positioned at one end, followed by an open-plan living and dining area, which extends into a covered patio. This intermediate outdoor space acts as a seamless extension of the communal areas, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living. At the farthest end, a dedicated music studio enhances the versatility of the home, allowing for creative expression in a space that can open towards both the covered patio and the orchard.

Climate-Responsive Architecture

A defining feature of the residence is its expansive gable roof, which serves both aesthetic and functional purposes. The overhanging eaves provide essential shading during the summer months, while in winter, they facilitate passive solar heating by allowing sunlight to penetrate indoors. Additionally, the covered patio serves as a ventilated buffer, mitigating heat buildup and offering a shaded retreat during warmer seasons.

To ensure longevity and energy efficiency, the structure is slightly elevated above the natural terrain, preventing moisture infiltration. The flooring, composed of polished concrete, acts as a thermal mass, contributing to indoor temperature stability. The house's envelope is constructed using high-performance SIP (Structural Insulated Panels) combined with double-glazed windows, optimizing insulation and reducing energy consumption.

Materiality and Aesthetic Expression

The interior design adopts a minimalist approach, allowing the architectural elements to take center stage. A neutral color palette accentuates the warmth of the exposed wooden beams, plank ceilings, and structural elements. Select areas feature personalized finishes, incorporating textures and hues that reflect the residents' preferences.

Externally, the house presents a bold yet harmonious aesthetic. Black timber cladding, punctuated by wooden-framed windows, creates a striking contrast while maintaining visual coherence with the natural surroundings. The roof, supported by exposed wooden beams, extends beyond the walls to emphasize the interplay of structure and environment.

The Calera de Tango House by Abarca Palma Arquitectos exemplifies a balanced integration of modern architecture and natural context. Through strategic orientation, climate-responsive design, and meticulous material selection, the residence achieves a seamless dialogue between comfort, sustainability, and aesthetic refinement.
