Located in the scenic landscapes of Purulia, India, the Cantilever Residence by Abin Design Studio redefines contemporary Indian living through a bold interplay of form, landscape, and environmental sensitivity. A Bold Architectural Gesture

The defining feature of the residence is its striking cantilevered first floor, which extends in two directions to form a sculptural canopy. This architectural gesture not only makes a powerful visual statement but also serves a climatic function—providing natural shade and transitional spaces that blur the boundaries between built form and the surrounding greenery. The meandering driveway, framed by lush gardens, gracefully leads visitors into a sheltered entrance that welcomes them under the expansive overhang.

Blending Built and Natural Landscapes

Designed as an extension of the terrain, the lower level of the home merges effortlessly with the topography of Purulia. Landscaped elements flow into the architecture, creating a living environment that feels organically rooted in its setting. The integration of native vegetation, water features, and open canopies supports passive cooling and encourages cross-ventilation—an essential strategy in the region’s warm climate.

This level is dedicated to recreation and communal life, fostering a fluid indoor-outdoor experience that invites residents to engage directly with nature.

Elevated Privacy and Tranquility

In contrast, the upper level is designed for privacy and reflection. Housing the family’s lounges and private rooms, it opens up to panoramic views of the surrounding green expanse. Large openings and terraces allow filtered daylight to flood in, while louvered screens provide adjustable shading and privacy. The design creates a tranquil retreat elevated above the animated ground plane, yet always visually connected to the landscape below.

A Home as a Living Gallery

For the homeowner—an avid art and sculpture collector—the residence also functions as a living gallery. Spatial configurations were carefully crafted to display artworks seamlessly within everyday living spaces, merging the experience of home and exhibition.

At the heart of the house lies a central courtyard, illuminated by a circular skylight that casts dynamic patterns of light and shadow across the interiors. A sculptural staircase spirals through this open void, acting as a spatial and visual centerpiece that unites both levels of the home.

Sustainable and Climate-Responsive Design

Environmental performance forms the core of the architectural approach. The Cantilever Residence employs a suite of passive design strategies to mitigate the harsh local climate:

  • High ceilings promote air circulation.
  • Overhangs and self-shaded floors reduce solar heat gain.
  • Operable louvered screens regulate light and temperature.
  • Green buffer zones and shallow water features provide natural cooling and humidification.

These design choices not only enhance comfort but also significantly reduce the home’s ecological footprint, reinforcing Abin Design Studio’s commitment to sustainable architecture in India.

The Seamless Blur of Inside and Out

The residence is characterized by a fluid dialogue between interior and exterior spaces. Wooden decks, bio-pools, and landscaped courtyards extend from indoor areas, creating moments of connection where architecture dissolves into nature. This interplay results in a living environment that is immersive, serene, and deeply rooted in place—a poetic reflection of modern Indian domestic architecture.
