Celestial Constellations
Reconnecting Under the Stars
To counter the overwhelming influence of digital media and revive human connections, we envisioned a high-tech yet deeply personal experience centered around light. Inspired by the timeless tradition of gathering around a campfire, our goal was to create a space for shared, memorable moments. Located in Yoyogi Park—being a close commute to Shibuya destination, known for its cherry blossoms, city views, lively markets, birdwatching spots, fountains, and Olympic history—the park is vibrant by day yet falls silent at night. Celestial Constellations aims to transform this tranquil nighttime setting into a communal gathering space where diverse communities can come together, recreating the warmth and connection of a campfire experience.
The journey unfolds through three main pavilions: Nobori, Miyabi, and Iki. Each pavilion’s design draws from a swirling form, symbolizing the continuous cycle of life. As visitors move through the sequence, the fractured swirl motif evolves, embodying the unique function and purpose of each space. Nobori, Miyabi, and Iki also connect to the Tokyo Skytree through their use of three of its signature colors—orange, pink, and blue—creating a visual link to Tokyo’s skyline and grounding the experience within the city’s identity.
These structures merge elements of traditional and contemporary Japanese culture, celebrating themes of light, nature, and cosmic awareness deeply rooted in Japan’s architectural and spiritual heritage. Arranged in succession, the pavilions balance indoor and outdoor spaces, featuring open layouts that interact dynamically with natural light from dawn to dusk. This play of light reflects Japan’s appreciation for subtlety and impermanence, capturing the shifting rhythms of nature and the universe. Each pavilion honors these values by integrating social spaces for markets, gardens, and moments of celestial reflection.
The journey begins at the “Market Pavilion,” illuminated in the warm orange hue of Nobori, a color symbolizing both good fortune and the spirit of fire. This gentle light serves as a beacon, warmly welcoming visitors with its auspicious hue and establishing a vibrant, community-centered atmosphere. More than just a landmark, this pavilion hosts local markets, intertwining cultural tradition with contemporary design to create a bustling community hub.
Continuing forward, visitors come upon the “Garden Pavilion,” gently bathed in the earthy pink hue of Miyabi. This color, symbolizing beauty and refinement, enhances the pavilion’s elegance. The gentle lighting invites visitors to pause, connect with the surrounding gardens, and take in the natural landscape. This balance of nature and design fosters tranquility and encourages quiet reflection.
The experience culminates at the Iki Pavilion, immersed in a blue that captures Tokyo’s essence, symbolizing purity, simplicity, and the reflection of water.By day, this blue highlights the pavilion’s organic design, casting a serene ambiance over the adjacent man-made pond that reflects Tokyo’s blend of modernity and tradition. As night falls, the Iki Pavilion undergoes a transformation, with multiple “blackout” moments where ambient light fades to near darkness, inviting the community to reconnect with the stars above. Free from artificial light, visitors share in a collective pause, marveling at the night sky and embracing a profound sense of unity and reflection. This concept comes to life through the blackout feature of the Iki Pavilion, where visitors are invited to gather, share stories, and reconnect under a sky full of stars. Like an intimate campfire in the wilderness, the experience fosters connection and reflection, capturing the timeless beauty of human interaction.
Celestial Constellations transforms Yoyogi Park into a dynamic space where the beauty of human connection unfolds beneath the vastness of the cosmos. By harmonizing traditional and modern elements, this experience evokes a sense of shared wonder that transcends the boundaries of time and technology. The pavilions—Nobori, Miyabi, and Iki—invite visitors to a journey through the themes of good fortune, beauty, and simplicity, each space thoughtfully designed to capture the essence of Japan’s cultural heritage while embracing the possibilities of contemporary design. As day transitions to night, the park awakens to a new rhythm, where diverse communities gather to reconnect with one another and the universe.
This experience is more than just a visual spectacle; it is a call to pause and reflect, a reminder of the profound connection between humans and the natural world. In a time when digital media often dominates our lives, Celestial Constellations offers a refreshing return to simplicity and presence, encouraging visitors to share stories, create memories, and find inspiration under a canopy of stars. It embodies the timeless warmth of gathering around a campfire while celebrating the unique spirit of Tokyo, making Yoyogi Park not only a destination but a journey of connection and celestial appreciation for all who enter.
