Chaos is a Ladder Hostel by DL Atelier: Architecture Between Heritage, Danger, and Connection
Chaos is a Ladder Hostel by DL Atelier blends heritage, modern design, and immersive experiences near the Great Wall, Beijing.
Reimagining Rural Hospitality Near the Great Wall
The Chaos is a Ladder Hostel, designed by DL Atelier, is part of a series of rural hospitality projects created for Xiaoxi B&B near the Great Wall at Shuiguan in Huairou, Beijing. Conceived not merely as a hostel but as a unique architectural experience, it redefines the meaning of escaping everyday life. Rather than being a “home,” the project functions as a thematic living environment—a space where fantasy and reality intertwine.

Architecture as a Game of Rules and Danger
The design explores the relationship between architecture, landscape, and human perception. The architects embraced the idea of a game—establishing rules that respect the site’s original structures while provoking curiosity through elements of danger and discovery.
Situated in direct proximity to the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, the hostel embodies the tension between heritage and contemporary life. Just as the Great Wall was historically built in response to danger, the architecture here introduces moments of uncertainty and surprise, challenging visitors to engage with their surroundings in unexpected ways.

Footbridge: Connection and Disconnection
A defining feature of the project is the 30-meter-long elevated footbridge that weaves through and above the existing buildings. This structure connects different vantage points—linking the courtyard, the Great Wall, and remnants of the old city pass. From the bridge, guests experience layered perspectives of the Great Wall and surrounding landscape.
The footbridge also reflects a dialogue between connection and separation—echoing the contrast between the Great Wall (built to divide) and modern antennas (built to connect). These elements coexist in the same landscape, revealing the dualities of history and technology, isolation and community, reality and virtuality.

Between Tourism and Authenticity
The project critically engages with the rapid transformation of rural villages near the Great Wall, where boutique B&Bs and internet celebrity culture have reshaped the local environment. While the hostel embraces its role as a photogenic destination, its design also reveals the underlying contradictions of modern tourism.
Large windows, sunken courtyards, and open communal areas create opportunities for interaction between visitors and locals. Yet, they also expose the tensions between authentic daily life and staged travel experiences. The design balances these contrasts, offering both immersive hospitality and a space of reflection.

Architectural Experience
- Respect for Heritage: Original wooden structures and spatial proportions were preserved, while new interventions enhance natural light and spatial fluidity.
- Landscape Integration: Views of the Great Wall are framed through courtyards, bridges, and terraces.
- Social Commentary: The project highlights how architecture, technology, and tourism culture intersect in contemporary China.

The Chaos is a Ladder Hostel by DL Atelier is more than just a rural hotel. It is an architectural narrative about danger, heritage, and connection. By blending historic remnants, modern structures, and conceptual storytelling, the hostel challenges visitors to reflect on how we experience space in an age of digital networks and curated travel moments.
