Chappe Art House is a striking new three-story art museum in Finland, designed by JKMM Architects. Located in the historic coastal town of Tammisaari (Ekenäs), this 1,210-square-meter architectural marvel integrates contemporary museum design with Finland's rich timber architecture heritage. The project, completed in 2023, serves as a key addition to the region's cultural landscape, housing contemporary art exhibitions and community events.

Architectural Vision and Design Approach

A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

JKMM Architects have skillfully blended traditional Finnish architecture with modern design principles. The building's black spruce-clad elevations pay homage to historic timber structures, while the interior embraces an open, loft-like aesthetic inspired by Nordic hall typology. The seamless integration of craftsmanship and contemporary architectural language highlights the firm's dedication to creating spaces that are both contextual and forward-thinking.

Spatial Composition and Functional Layout

Chappe Art House is strategically positioned in the museum quarter of Tammisaari, physically linking to the adjacent Raseborg Museum via an underground passage. The three-level structure is designed for optimal functionality:

  • Level Two (Top Floor): Main exhibition galleries featuring contemporary art.
  • Level One (Ground Floor): Entrance, multi-purpose foyer, and a shared museum garden.
  • Basement Level: Underground link to Raseborg Museum and additional facilities.

A Cultural Hub for Contemporary Art

Exhibition Spaces and Artistic Collaborations

Chappe Art House is dedicated to showcasing contemporary art, hosting two major exhibitions annually. The project was made possible through the generous support of Professor Albert de la Chapelle (1933–2020), a renowned medical researcher and avid Nordic art collector. His legacy is deeply embedded in the museum’s mission to enrich Finland’s cultural landscape.

JKMM collaborated with leading Finnish artists to create site-specific installations. Notable pieces include a ceramic artwork by Karin Widnäs in the foyer and a light installation by Petri Vainio, enhancing the immersive art experience. Additionally, the museum’s custom-designed furniture, crafted by local carpenters, reinforces its strong connection to local craftsmanship.

Sustainability and Technical Innovations

Climate-Controlled Interiors

The museum’s design prioritizes art preservation through controlled light levels, humidity regulation, and structural engineering capable of supporting heavy sculptures. These features align with international museum conservation standards, ensuring the safe display of valuable artworks.

Accessibility and Community Engagement

Chappe Art House is designed for inclusive access, accommodating visitors with pushchairs and mobility aids. The museum aims to foster year-round cultural engagement, contributing to the economic and social vitality of Tammisaari, which traditionally experiences seasonal tourism.

Featured Exhibitions at Chappe Art House

Upon opening, Chappe will host three inaugural exhibitions:

  1. Barösund 1870 -> 2023: A historical showcase inspired by the de la Chapelle art collection.
  2. Amazing and Magical: A retrospective on the founder’s vision and the museum’s development.
  3. Climate and Art – Alternative Approaches: An exploration of ecological reconstruction through an artistic lens.
