Site Context and Design Inspiration

Located in the quiet village of Casal de São Brás, the project site is defined by rolling terrain, clusters of trees, and scattered rock formations overlooking the scenic hills of Serra de Sicó. The architects approached the design through a careful reading of the land, uncovering traces of local history and rural practices.

One of the most influential discoveries was an existing threshing floor—traditionally used for agricultural processing and social gatherings. This element became a central inspiration, shaping the conceptual foundation of the house. The name “Chouso,” meaning an enclosed or fenced pastoral space, further reinforces the connection between architecture and agrarian heritage.

Architectural Concept: Privacy, Landscape, and Spatial Harmony

The design of Chouso House is guided by the need to balance privacy, openness, and landscape integration. Positioned strategically, the house shields itself from the nearby road while opening toward expansive views of the surrounding countryside.

The architecture adopts an L-shaped configuration, creating a protected internal patio that acts as a transitional outdoor space. This courtyard echoes the traditional threshing floor, serving as a social nucleus while maintaining a strong relationship with nature.

Functional Layout and Spatial Organization

The house is organized into two distinct programmatic wings that enhance both functionality and spatial clarity:

  • Eastern Wing (Technical Zone): Includes service-oriented spaces such as the garage and barbecue area, ensuring operational efficiency and separation from living zones.
  • Western Wing (Social and Private Zone): Hosts the primary living spaces, including bedrooms, study areas, kitchen, dining, and living rooms, all oriented to maximize natural light and scenic views.

This zoning strategy supports a fluid circulation pattern while maintaining privacy and comfort across different areas of the home.

Materiality and Interior Design Approach

A defining feature of Chouso House is its use of natural materials, particularly stone and wood, which establish a warm and authentic interior atmosphere. These materials not only reflect the regional architectural language but also contribute to a timeless aesthetic.

The interiors are characterized by a minimalist yet cozy design, where every element—from finishes to built-in furniture—has been carefully crafted by the architectural studio. This holistic design approach ensures visual consistency and reinforces the connection between interior and exterior spaces.

Sustainable and Contextual Architecture

Chouso House stands as an example of contextual and sustainable architecture, where design decisions are driven by environmental sensitivity and cultural continuity. The integration of the building into the landscape minimizes visual impact while enhancing the user’s experience of the natural surroundings.

The project emphasizes passive design strategies, material authenticity, and spatial efficiency, aligning with contemporary principles of sustainable residential architecture.
