Climate seesaw
A seesaw-like architecture influenced by human interaction.
Extreme weather not only causes global warming, but the huge change of weather all over the world. The weather is supposed to be balanced all the time, the earth has its own system to maintain the balance. More and more research shows that weather whiplash is now frequently happening. A place that is experiencing drought is also encountering flood, the balance has already been destroyed. Every harm we cause to the earth will not only be endured by ourselves, but also influence someone on the other side of the earth that you can’t see, and even the next generation.
Italy is a place that is influenced by flood a lot, the consequences caused by flood are getting more and more severe every year. However, tourists from all over the world don’t know that, and it is actually inseparable from the disasters their countries are encountering. As a result, the balance is the main point we want to focus on the project. We tried to design a seesaw-like architecture to emphasize the moment when the balance collapses. The project wants to warn the viewers that every disaster is caused by the mistakes we are unaware of on a daily basis. No one is innocent or gonna survive when the collapse happens.
There is a water cycle system on the architecture. The building is at a stable state at first, and the middle area will start to collect water when it’s raining. As more and more people stand on the one side of the seesaw, the building will start to tilt to that side. When the seesaw is over tilt, water from the middle area will start to flow to one side and cause flooding. At the same time, drought will happen on the other side. The seesaw will return to a stable state when all the water flows out of the building, and the cycle will keep looping year after year. This cycle system causes the flood and drought on different sides alternately, the influence changes back and forth. It will cause the park on the top to be ruined with the passing time. The seesaw will return to a stable state, but the harm caused by humans is irreversible.
Overall, humans are the critical element in this system. The park can correspond to the daily life we have, and water here is the symbol of damage and danger although it is really common in our life. We understand how it causes the situation, realizing the damage is continuing to grow everyday, and forget the existence of danger unconsciously. Finally, those dangers we have ignored before turn into disasters that are irreversible.
