Communicate

The Communicate project particularly fosters personal exchange between citizens and political decision-makers. In an era increasingly shaped by social media, direct dialogue is gradually being pushed into the background. Public and private discussions are often avoided or shifted to digital communication spaces. Communicate consciously counters this trend by creating a physical space where people can engage in dialogue on a wide range of social issues—especially with regard to collaborative urban development.

A central design element of the installation is the use of height-adjustable tables, which enable conversations to take place both seated and standing. This allows for flexible use—ranging from brief informal exchanges to in-depth, intensive discussions. The concept is further enhanced by a centrally positioned platform that serves as a stage for presentations or the articulation of concerns.

On the reverse side of the installation, visitors also have the opportunity to pin up their wishes and ideas—an option for those who are short on time or prefer not to engage in direct conversation.

The installation is located on the sidewalk along Vienna’s Ringstraße, near the entrance to the Volksgarten. Its positioning is deliberately chosen for its proximity to key political institutions such as the Austrian Parliament and Vienna City Hall—places where political decision-makers are based. At the same time, it is situated adjacent to the Volksgarten, a well-frequented public space that is actively used by citizens. This spatial placement symbolically and functionally bridges the distance between civil society and political authority.
