Como Lounge Café by S.DA – A Contemporary Tribute to Al Ain’s Natural Landscape in Dubai
Como Lounge Café blends Al Ain’s natural textures with contemporary design, featuring recycled materials, sculptural elements, and a calm, cohesive interior.
The new Como Lounge Café by S.DA marks the brand’s first Dubai location and its second branch outside its hometown of Al Ain. Designed by lead architect Duaa Abukhalaf, with lighting design by Dc Luce Studio, the café extends the brand’s identity into an urban context while grounding it in the tactile, natural character of Al Ain’s landscapes. The 178 m² café presents a sophisticated interplay of raw materiality, subdued tones, and sculptural spatial elements, establishing a unique hospitality experience within Dubai’s café culture.

A Design Language Rooted in Origin and Reinterpreted for Dubai
The architectural concept draws heavily from the topography, textures, and earthy palette of Al Ain. Rather than literal references, the design translates these natural qualities through an abstract, contemporary visual language, creating an environment that feels organic yet refined. The space is anchored by a continuous “datum wall,” which wraps the interior as a unifying backdrop. Constructed from recycled glass and porcelain tiles, this wall introduces depth, texture, and sustainability, subtly showcasing the brand’s connection to nature.

Materiality and Contrast: A Controlled Dialogue
The interior palette balances warm, tactile surfaces with cool, industrial materials, forming a spatial dialogue that defines the café’s identity. The roughness of the recycled tiles contrasts with the precision of brushed stainless steel, creating a balance between earthiness and modernity. Seating combines wooden chairs with minimalist steel tables, reinforcing the interplay of warmth and sleekness while maintaining visual calm.

A Sculptural Counter as the Café’s Core
At the heart of the design is a sculptural coffee counter, serving both as an operational hub and an artistic centerpiece. Inspired by the natural gesture of balancing stones, the counter features solid marble blocks supporting polished stainless steel forms that appear delicately poised. Raised slightly above the floor, the counter carries a monolithic presence while maintaining an unexpected sense of lightness.
Above it, a custom stainless steel canopy mirrors the composition of the counter, gently reflecting light and movement. This floating canopy strengthens the visual connection between the grounded marble volumes and the elevated steel components, emphasizing the balance between heaviness and suspension.

Custom-Made Elements and Crafted Cohesion
A number of bespoke components were created specifically for the Dubai branch. The site-specific flooring, composed of cut stone pieces integrated with cast terrazzo, introduces a subtle pattern that follows the internal spatial rhythm. These custom surfaces further enrich the sensory experience of moving through the café.
Every transition—from walls to flooring to furniture—has been considered with meticulous precision. The muted stone palette anchors the interior, while the recycled tile walls provide tactile richness. The interplay of materials creates a cohesive aesthetic that is calm, understated, and deeply connected to the brand’s origins.

A Contemporary Café Grounded in Nature and Identity
Como Lounge Café by S.DA demonstrates how cultural roots and natural landscapes can inform a contemporary interior without relying on literal symbolism. Through thoughtful material choices, sculptural forms, and harmonious spatial composition, the design achieves an atmosphere that is serene, cohesive, and unmistakably connected to Al Ain’s organic textures—reinterpreted for Dubai’s modern urban fabric.
