The Contentful workplace in Berlin, designed by toi toi toi Creative Studio, exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to office design. Completed in 2022, this office space spans 8,215 square meters and was reimagined in response to the post-pandemic work environment. With an emphasis on adaptability, inclusivity, and employee well-being, the design fosters a productive yet comfortable atmosphere for employees of the software company.

Creating Human-Centric, Agile Workspaces
With the return of employees following the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for a transformative office design became evident. To address this, toi toi toi Creative Studio set out to create a human-centric workplace that supports diverse work styles, promotes collaboration, and enhances individual productivity. Through an innovative design process, which involved a design committee made up of Contentful's employees, the studio delivered a space that is as flexible as it is functional.

Collaborative and Dynamic Interiors
At the core of this redesign is a commitment to fostering collaboration and interaction. The open-concept cafeteria and event space provide a diverse environment for team-building activities and informal meetings. The flexible meeting rooms cater to various team sizes, with adaptable layouts to meet different project needs.
The design also incorporates a large outdoor terrace, offering employees a space to unwind while connecting with nature. Employee gardens extend the interior’s organic feel, promoting a healthy and sustainable work environment.

Innovative Features for Employee Well-Being
A key focus of this project was enhancing employee well-being through thoughtful design. The space includes a range of amenities designed to support both physical and mental health. Key features include:
- End-of-trip facilities: Underground bike parking, showers, and a fitness room promote an active lifestyle.
- Custom-designed smart lockers: Integrated throughout the office, these lockers offer a personalized experience.
- Gender-neutral washrooms: Equipped with individually programmed speakers, offering a fun and unique musical experience.
- Neurodiversity-friendly elements: The workplace includes adjustable lighting, automated sunshades, ergonomic workstations, and interactive screens for video conferencing.
In addition, quiet zones and acoustic treatments balance the open office areas, allowing for focus and relaxation. The office layout also incorporates dedicated spaces for meditation, prayer, and creative activities like music-making.

Sustainable and Local Sourcing
This project was built with sustainability at its core, featuring eco-conscious materials and a commitment to local craftsmanship. Some sustainable design elements include:
- Recycled materials: The flooring in the cafeteria is made from biopolymer sourced from recycled fish nets, and acoustic ceiling spray is crafted from recycled denim.
- Renewable resources: Fabrics and acoustic wall panels are sourced from renewable materials or 100% recycled plastic bottles.
- Repurposing existing furniture: Elements from the previous Contentful office were seamlessly integrated into the new design, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

The Contentful workplace is a perfect example of how office spaces can be redesigned to meet the needs of today’s workforce. With its focus on adaptability, employee well-being, and sustainability, this space is a model for future office designs. It successfully blends flexibility with human-centered features to create a workplace that encourages collaboration, productivity, and wellness.
