Blending History with Contemporary Design

Positioned near the confluence of the Ems and Salzbach rivers, the site historically housed mills and sawmills from the 16th to the 20th century. The new structure replaces a wooden annex that was lost to fire in 2020. The result is a slender, modern volume that respects the traditional cross-gable roof typology while asserting a distinctive, contemporary presence.

Designed to navigate the constraints of a compact urban infill, the building is shaped by existing structures on the east while defining a new, dynamic facade on the west. It maintains harmony with the surrounding architecture through horizontal staggered volumes, reinforcing its connection to the historical context.

Innovative Interior Spatial Design

The interior architecture continues the theme of contrast and connection. A strategically placed staircase follows the roofline of the former building, creating a sequence of varying ceiling heights. This interplay of low and high spaces enhances spatial dynamics, offering a mix of openness and intimacy.

While the structure’s exterior exhibits a bold, urban presence, the interior is a blend of natural materials, fostering warmth and sustainability. The gabled top floor serves as the project’s architectural climax, offering breathtaking views and a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Sustainability and Materiality

The project embodies a sustainable building philosophy, integrating natural materials to enhance indoor air quality and thermal comfort. The combination of wood, concrete, and clay plaster not only reinforces the building’s ecological footprint but also creates a balanced, biophilic environment.
