Preservation Challenges and Design Vision

Before Tsing-Tien Making embarked on the project, the residence underwent comprehensive conservation and reinforcement. The renovation faced challenges due to stringent government restrictions, original layout limitations, and the need for improved natural daylighting. However, the design vision aimed not only to address these challenges but also to elevate the overall functionality of Zhang Garden. The goal was to create a space that harmoniously combines books, traditional culture, and the study of Chinese classics.

Strategies for a Harmonious Space

Tsing-Tien Making employed innovative strategies to enhance circulation, spatial relationships, and overall visitor experience. The design selectively opened parts of the residence for public use, strategically dividing the space to accommodate both public and back-of-house activities. The creation of folded spaces and a vertical garden concept added layers to the visitor's journey, fostering a unique and diverse experience.

A Visual Symphony of Tradition and Modernity

The renovation skillfully incorporated traditional elements such as green window grilles, symbolizing Zhang Taiyan's traits, and a vertical courtyard concept. The greenery outside is artfully framed through stained-glass windows, offering visitors glimpses of the picturesque Zhang Garden. The bookstore's design not only preserves the original window views but also adds a contemporary touch with varied shades of green.
