Genoa Cornigliano, a neighbourhood with a rich industrial history, is undergoing a remarkable revitalization thanks to the efforts of architectural firms Dodi Moss and SAB. At the heart of this transformation lies the newly completed Community Center, which breathes new life into the former Dufour candy production buildings. With a careful balance of preservation and reimagining, the architects have created a public space that fosters social interaction, recreation, and community engagement.

Cornigliano's evolution traces back to its aristocratic roots as a sought-after summer retreat. However, the area experienced significant changes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, characterized by rapid urbanization and the establishment of a massive steel plant. The subsequent decline in employment following the energy crisis of the 1970s left the neighbourhood in need of rejuvenation. In recent years, efforts to reclaim disused industrial areas have sparked a renaissance, bringing stability, cultural value, and a renewed sense of pride to Cornigliano.

The Dufour factory site represents an early step in this ongoing redevelopment, addressing the neighbourhood's lack of public spaces and embracing its potential. Dodi Moss and SAB have seamlessly integrated the Community Center into the existing fabric, resulting in an open and inclusive environment. The building houses a variety of amenities, including a versatile multi-purpose gym, dance and billiard halls, recreational areas, and covered outdoor spaces. By demolishing some structures and adding new ones, the architects successfully reconfigured the space while preserving traces of the original industrial identity.

The Community Center spans two levels, each designed with specific intentions. The ground floor, constructed with reinforced concrete, provides stability and solidity. In contrast, the second floor features a steel framework and polycarbonate panels that flood the space with natural light, creating an airy and inviting atmosphere. The inclusion of a reading room, library, bar, multipurpose rooms, and a hall for debates and meetings enhances the Center's functionality, surpassing the limited facilities of the past. Additionally, a terrace on the rooftop provides an enjoyable outdoor area during the summer months, offering a respite for visitors.

The redesign of the outdoor spaces has greatly improved accessibility and usability. Thoughtful interventions, such as creating parking areas and shaded spaces, ensure convenience and comfort for visitors. Pedestrian surfaces have been raised to separate pedestrians from traffic, ensuring safety while facilitating public activities within the complex. The central bar serves as a focal point, promoting social interaction and acting as a gateway to the gym, which benefits from its prominent urban frontage.

One of the project's notable achievements is the integration of existing and new spaces, exemplified by the covered loggia that connects various areas within the Center. This architectural feature not only enhances circulation but also bridges the gap between the entrance space and the rear of the building. Large windows establish a seamless connection between the internal rooms and the open spaces, allowing for an uninterrupted flow of movement and fostering a sense of harmony between indoor and outdoor environments. A magnificent Ginkgo biloba tree becomes a natural gathering spot, marking yet another area of encounter in the complex web of public spaces.

The Dodi Moss and SAB's Community Center in Genoa Cornigliano stand as a testament to the power of architectural intervention in rejuvenating communities. Through their innovative design approach and commitment to preserving the neighbourhood's heritage, they have created a transformative space that fosters social cohesion, cultural exchange, and the overall well-being of the local residents. This remarkable architectural achievement exemplifies the potential for community centres to serve as catalysts for positive change, breathing new life into once-neglected areas and empowering communities to shape their own future.
