Dot Ateliers: Artistic Innovation and Sustainable Design in Accra by Adjaye Associates
Dot Ateliers in Accra by Adjaye Associates is a sustainable, community-focused artist residency blending studios, galleries, and cultural innovation seamlessly.
Dot Ateliers, designed by Adjaye Associates, is a groundbreaking cultural and community hub located in the Osu waterfront neighborhood of Accra, Ghana. Completed in 2023, this 560 m² artist residency combines sustainability, community engagement, and cutting-edge architecture, serving as a destination for local and international artists while redefining the possibilities of creative spaces within urban contexts.
The project was envisioned as an “architectural tool” to support artistic production, providing studios, galleries, and shared spaces that encourage experimentation, collaboration, and cultural exchange. Artist Amoako Boafo, founder of dot.ateliers, emphasizes the importance of providing artists with the resources, materials, and freedom to create, fostering a space where their work can flourish while engaging with the local and global art scene.

Architecture and Design
Dot Ateliers occupies a midblock plot, with a perforated wooden entry façade creating a calm, inviting approach from the bustling streets of Accra. Behind this entrance, a three-story monolithic structure rises, composed of stacked volumes designed to maximize both functionality and spatial experience. The building houses a café, office, library, studios, and gallery spaces, all arranged along a central circulation spine that connects the three floors seamlessly.
The double-envelope rammed earth façade, extending from the ground to the roof, is a core sustainable feature. This eco-conscious design leverages local earth for natural insulation, reducing energy consumption while maintaining comfort and promoting healthy indoor environments. An air gap between the outer and inner walls guides visitors along circulation paths, while softening heat gain and creating shaded areas for optimal thermal comfort.

Interior Spaces and Functionality
The first floor is designed as a flexible studio or gallery space, with four-meter-high ceilings and ample natural light, ideal for large-scale artistic production. The floor plan accommodates multiple artists simultaneously and includes utility zones with sinks, storage, and restrooms. Strategically placed north- and south-facing windows offer views of the urban context and waterfront, connecting interior activity with Accra’s vibrant cityscape.
The top floor hosts a six-meter-high sawtooth gallery, inspired by the pitched roofs of surrounding buildings. North-facing skylights provide diffused natural light, perfect for exhibiting artworks in a controlled and inspiring atmosphere.

Materiality plays a central role in Dot Ateliers’ identity. The transition from raw exterior materials: rammed earth, exposed concrete, and timber: to polished interior finishes: terrazzo, plasterboard, and refined timber elements, creates a dialogue between public and private, hard and soft. Custom-designed furniture, including café counters, library desks, and timber benches, reinforces the functional and aesthetic cohesion of the space.
Sustainability and Community Impact
Dot Ateliers exemplifies ecologically responsive architecture, emphasizing local materials and low-carbon construction techniques. The building not only serves as an incubator for Ghanaian arts but also establishes a community-oriented hub, providing a platform for exhibitions, workshops, and cultural programming that integrates the neighborhood with the global arts discourse.
By merging sustainability, culture, and cutting-edge design, Adjaye Associates has created a landmark in Accra that celebrates creativity, fosters dialogue, and advances architectural innovation. Dot Ateliers stands as a model for how cultural infrastructure can support artists, enrich communities, and contribute to environmentally responsible urban development.
