DP6 Architectuurstudio Unveils 'EcoScape Pavilion': Harmonizing Architecture with Nature
Can Architecture Embrace Nature? DP6 Architectuurstudio Presents 'The Natural Pavilion

In a remarkable display of innovation and sustainable design, DP6 Architectuurstudio has unveiled its latest creation, "The Natural Pavilion," at the prestigious Floriade Expo 2022. This stunning inspiration pavilion showcases the power of circular, bio-based construction while addressing the pressing spatial challenges faced by the Netherlands.
Designed and constructed within a year, The Natural Pavilion stands as a testament to the Dutch National Government's commitment to the energy and raw materials transition, solving housing shortages, promoting sustainable agriculture, restoring biodiversity, and adapting to climate change. It serves as a beacon of hope, contributing to the increased adoption and scaling-up of bio-based solutions.
At the heart of this architectural marvel lies a simple yet ingenious building concept. The structure features an elegant framework of indigenous wooden beams, serving as a structurally evident shell. These modular elements are ingeniously connected by a universal steel connecting element, allowing for flexibility and easy assembly.
One of the key highlights of The Natural Pavilion is its remarkable adaptability. Through the use of bio-based and re-used materials such as wooden floors, bio-based walls, and windows made from re-purposed glass, the filling-in of the framework enables the creation of diverse spaces that fulfil specific conditions, including acoustic and fire-safety requirements. This unparalleled flexibility ensures that the pavilion can be easily dismantled and rebuilt in different configurations, amplifying its long-term sustainability and versatility.
While The Natural Pavilion impresses with its eco-friendly construction, it also excels in providing a comfortable and inviting atmosphere without relying heavily on technical installations. The compact design has been optimized to create pleasant conditions with minimal technical intervention. Wooden louvres, parametrically designed to strike an ideal balance between sunlight and temperature, grace the façades, resulting in visually striking exteriors on each side. The self-adjusting glass louvres, combined with roof windows, facilitate natural thermal ventilation and cooling, reducing the need for artificial means. Furthermore, the clever employment of wooden sawtooth roofs ensures a soft diffusion of northern light into the atrium, minimizing the reliance on artificial lighting.
Beyond its stunning architectural features, The Natural Pavilion serves a multifaceted purpose. Following its exhibition at Floriade Expo 2022, it will be repurposed as an exhibition space and a film theatre in various Dutch nature reserves. By 2025, the pavilion will become an integral part of the FlevoCampus sustainable food project, further contributing to the region's sustainable development.
With its awe-inspiring design, commitment to circularity, and emphasis on bio-based solutions, The Natural Pavilion stands as an iconic symbol of inspiration and innovation in architecture. DP6 Architectuurstudio's creation is set to captivate visitors, leaving a lasting impression and igniting a passion for sustainable design in the hearts of all who experience it.
