Echo of the Sea: A Contemporary Coastal Holiday Home by Entopos Architects
A serene modern retreat in Crete blending Greek heritage with contemporary design in a reimagined coastal holiday home architecture.
A Seamless Blend of Heritage and Horizon
Located on the sun-kissed island of Crete, near the historical Frangokastello fortress, the Echo of the Sea holiday home by Entopos Architects is a modern reinterpretation of coastal holiday home architecture. Designed to accommodate eight guests, this serene retreat blends regional architectural traditions with contemporary sensibilities, transforming an existing structure into a harmonious dialogue between built form and natural landscape.

Reimagining the Coastal Residence
Entopos Architects worked within the original building footprint to reconfigure the interior into a spacious, open-plan living and kitchen area. On the southern edge of the structure, two private bedrooms have been crafted to offer expansive sea views, establishing a direct connection with the coastal horizon. This reorganization emphasizes fluidity and functionality, allowing for a seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle essential to the Mediterranean experience.

The Arch as a Design Language
One of the most striking architectural elements of the Echo of the Sea is the recurring use of arches. These curved forms are employed not merely for aesthetic purposes, but as a unifying element across the facades, interior details, and outdoor spaces. The arches serve as visual and spatial bridges between the enclosed and open areas, echoing the gentle rhythm of the sea itself.

Light, Texture, and Privacy
Natural light is carefully modulated through strategically placed perforated ceramic bricks, which provide both privacy and ventilation. These elements soften the strong geometric forms of the building, while their texture adds depth to the facades. Small northern openings reference embrasures, subtly connecting the design to the military past of the nearby Venetian fortress. Meanwhile, slanted walls on the exterior evoke the ‘scarpo’ technique, a defensive architectural strategy used in ancient fortifications.

Balancing Solidity and Lightness
A suspended pergola on the southern façade offers shade while maintaining openness. This lightweight structure provides a counterpoint to the solidity of the surrounding walls and enhances circulation between interior and exterior spaces. On either side of the main building, auxiliary volumes are thoughtfully integrated. The western suite serves as a private guest retreat, while the eastern wing is dedicated to communal outdoor living with a shaded dining area and barbecue.

Crafting Outdoor Experiences
The landscape design by Gaiorama plays an essential role in shaping the home’s relationship with its environment. Winding paths, low stone walls, and native aromatic plantings create a rich sensory journey through the exterior spaces. A former well, now transformed into a jacuzzi beside the pool, anchors the courtyard in local heritage. The use of marble, stone, and wood throughout the outdoor elements reinforces the project’s commitment to natural materials and coastal resilience.

A Refined Vision of Coastal Living
Echo of the Sea represents a sophisticated model of coastal holiday home architecture, rooted in place yet forward-thinking in execution. Every detail, from material choices to spatial planning, reinforces the home’s identity as both a tranquil escape and a contemporary architectural statement. By merging Greek vernacular elements with modern design strategies, Entopos Architects have created a dwelling that celebrates both memory and modernity.
