Located east of downtown Mérida, Yucatán, El Gran La Plancha Park is a large-scale urban regeneration project that transforms the former Mérida Railway Station, dating back to 1920, into a contemporary metropolitan park. Designed by Muñoz Arquitectos in collaboration with Quesnel arquitectos, the project reclaims a historically significant yet long-abandoned site, reintegrating it into the city’s social, cultural, and ecological fabric.

From Railway Infrastructure to Urban Void

The former railway complex, once a powerful symbol of Yucatán’s henequen boom and industrial prosperity, fell into decline as rail transport lost prominence. Years of neglect turned the site into a fragmented and unsafe urban void, overrun by endemic vegetation and deteriorating structures, a “railway graveyard” disconnected from everyday urban life.

Rather than erasing this layered history, the design embraces the site’s memory as a catalyst for renewal. Existing traces of infrastructure are incorporated into a new landscape narrative, allowing the park to act as both a public amenity and a living archive of Mérida’s industrial past.

A Sustainable and Resilient Metropolitan Park

Spanning approximately 20,000 square meters, El Gran La Plancha Park is conceived as a model for sustainable urban development and climate-responsive public space. Environmental responsibility informs every design decision, from biodiversity conservation to efficient resource management. Native vegetation restores local ecosystems, while shaded paths and open green areas respond to Mérida’s tropical climate, enhancing thermal comfort and walkability.

The park’s layout strengthens east, west urban connectivity, stitching together surrounding historic neighborhoods and providing much-needed green infrastructure within the expanding city.

Social Integration and the “Power of 10”

At the heart of the project is a strong social agenda. The park promotes community cohesion, inclusivity, and democratic access through a diverse mix of cultural, educational, recreational, and economic activities. Guided by the urban design principle known as the “Power of 10,” the park incorporates multiple destinations: spaces for leisure, culture, learning, and gathering, that encourage repeated use and long-term engagement by diverse user groups.

This multiplicity of programs transforms El Gran La Plancha Park into an active civic platform rather than a passive green space, supporting everyday life while hosting events that strengthen collective identity.
