Electric Vibes
Adaptation of old powerhouse in Philadelphia
The main idea of the project was to create a place where people can spend their free time. We wanted to combine entertainment for children and adults. Whole powerhouse was divided into twelve entertainment zones: shop, laser tag, climbing walls, restauration, roller skating rink, bowling, skatepark, graffiti walls, springboards, gallery, yoga studio and roof garden. This variety of entertainment allows more people to be interested in this place.
After analyzing the materials and getting acquainted with the history of the object, we immediately knew that this is the topic we want. The large scale of the project was initially a problem on how to find oneself in it. There were many ideas, but after analyzing the area, we wanted to make this object available to people with different needs. The starting point was to preserve the architecture of the building and adapt to its character. Large windows through which a lot of light enters were one of the points in choosing the type of modernization. In the same way, large production rooms immediately reminded us of the character of skateparks. Harsh walls and floors were a good element of the start. The facility had to be adapted to a larger number of people who were to stay in it.some rooms have been adapted for toilets and changing rooms. The first room after entering the building from the street side was adapted to a reception hall, a shop where you can buy the necessary things for indoor attractions, and an office zone for facility employees. Climbing the stairs to the first floor we will reach the gallery where local artists can exhibit their works. Returning to the ground floor, after passing the reception, we enter the hall from the aquarium where on both sides there are designed changing rooms divided into women's and men's. In the next part of the building, there is a division into a communication zone from which we can go to an activity such as laser tag arranged on different levels of climbing walls which are also with the ability to move on two floors. Moving on, recipients can choose a roller skating rink adapted for people’s different skill level. For people on roller skates, access to the restaurant is also provided. In the restaurant there is also the possibility of organizing birthdays or special events. If the activity on roller skates is not interesting for the visitor, they can go bowling, separated by a wall from the restaurant zone and the roller skating rink.
Next room that people can choose is a skatepark with many ramps for everyone's skills. At the end of the hall there are walls intended for graffiti painting.
Beetwen skatepark zone and roller skating zone there is space with trees and springboards where people can calm down and take a breath before next attractions.
On the second floor we also designed a yoga studio containing two fitness rooms with yoga mats and mirrors. Near the studios there are changing rooms and toilets. The rooms have acoustic isolation so the people that practice yoga can calm down and meditate. When the people end their exercises they can walk through the mezzanine illuminated by a skylight on the roof and stay calm admiring the trees growing on the first floor.
The chimneys of the factory have been adapted individually to each zone - skate park’s has equipment rental on itself, roller skating rink - comfortable banches for tired skaters. Each chimney has trellis for climbing plants.
The garden roof is a place where people can admire the sight view of Philadelphia. There is a small bar connected with the restaurant, from the first floor and there are also armchairs, sofas and tables so they might feel relaxed. This is also a great place for a party with amazing light illuminations at night.
In this building people might spend their whole day playing with family and have a great time together that puts them in good vibes for a long time.
Our design was concentrated on the recipient and we put much effort into making the whole building convenient for everyone. It does not depend on age, gender or wealth, in “Electric Vibes” there is space for everyone.
