Elva Hotel: A Riverside Architectural Gem by Mange Bekker Arkitektur
Elva Hotel in Voss, Norway, blends modern Scandinavian architecture with nature, using sustainable timber and flood-resilient stilt design.
Elva Hotel, also known as The River Hotel, is a unique boutique hotel situated in Voss, Norway, designed by Mange Bekker Arkitektur. Completed in 2023, this architectural project is a prime example of modern Scandinavian design seamlessly integrated with nature. Voss is widely recognized for its breathtaking landscape and as a hub for outdoor and extreme sports enthusiasts. The client envisioned creating a distinct accommodation experience that complements their existing activity center, enabling guests to fully immerse themselves in the pristine natural environment.

A Unique Hotel Design Inspired by Nature
Covering a total area of 860 m², Elva Hotel consists of 14 guest rooms distributed across five freestanding tower-like structures, each containing one to three rooms. These towers are accompanied by a main building that houses four wheelchair-accessible rooms, a reception area, a conference room, and a restaurant. The main building is strategically linked to an existing facility that accommodates a bar, café, kitchen, and spa. The restaurant emphasizes the use of locally sourced ingredients, promoting regional cuisine.

Flood-Resilient Architecture in a Climate-Conscious Era
One of the primary challenges during the design and construction phases was the site's susceptibility to flooding. Much of the plot lies two to four meters below the anticipated future flood zone, factoring in climate change projections. Furthermore, the site encompasses delicate wetland habitats along the water's edge, necessitating extra care throughout the construction process to protect the environment.
To address flood concerns, the architects elevated the majority of the buildings on stilts above the 200-year flood level. The only exception is the restaurant, which is situated below this threshold but designed to withstand potential flooding. It features water-resistant materials, with all technical systems installed at least 1.4 meters above the ground. The elevated structures also contribute to creating shaded outdoor spaces for guests, while allowing uninterrupted visual connections to the riverfront.

Sustainable Timber Construction Minimizing Environmental Impact
Sustainability is at the heart of Elva Hotel's design ethos. Concrete was limited to the foundation and flood-prone sections, while the remainder of the construction utilized precision-cut timber. This choice not only reduced the hotel's carbon footprint but also minimized construction waste and accelerated the building process. The structures were carefully positioned to harmonize with the site's topography, offering expansive views of the river, lake, and surrounding mountains.

Seamless Accessibility and Integration with the Landscape
The freestanding units are situated 1.5 meters below the adjacent parking lot, connected to the main building via a covered, wheelchair-accessible walkway. This sunken pathway serves as a natural division between the built environment and the adjacent natural landscape. Additionally, this elevation difference reduces the visual impact of the buildings on neighboring residential properties.

Natural Material Palette Complementing the Nordic Environment
Elva Hotel's exterior is characterized by a palette of natural materials that blend harmoniously with the surrounding environment. Locally sourced meadow grasses and native flowers adorn the outdoor spaces, fostering biodiversity and supporting local bird and insect populations. The interiors emphasize simplicity and functionality, with large windows framing panoramic views of the river and mountains.
