The Empty Box House, designed by TAA DESIGN in 2022, is an extraordinary example of modern residential architecture in densely populated urban environments. Located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, this 180 m² home is tailored for a young family seeking functional, light-filled living spaces that prioritize connection, play, and nature.

This innovative house addresses the challenges of urban living by integrating playgrounds, study areas, and workspaces within a compact footprint. The design divides the interior into two main zones: the rear one-third hosts bedrooms, toilets, and the kitchen, while the front two-thirds creates a multifunctional playground and study spacefor children, fostering interaction and fluidity between family members. Large trees and natural ventilation enhance the indoor environment, making the home feel expansive despite its urban constraints.

One of the defining features of the Empty Box House is its use of staggered floors and flexible spatial organization. By raising and lowering floors strategically, the design ensures visual connectivity throughout the house, allowing children’s play areas to remain connected with the parents’ workspace and bedrooms. Sunlight, natural wind flow, and even birdsong permeate the spaces, creating a lively, nature-infused atmosphere. The incorporation of hollow iron floorsfacilitates ventilation and allows light to travel from the roof to the ground floor.

Materials are thoughtfully chosen to balance aesthetics, cost-efficiency, and durability. The house uses raw material textures to create a modern yet warm and natural feel while maximizing the construction budget. The project demonstrates that compact homes can still deliver high-quality living experiences, blending functionality, sustainability, and visual appeal.

It emphasizes quality of life, multifunctional spaces, and a harmonious relationship with nature, proving that even limited space can be transformed into a vibrant home.
