Exploring design like never before
UNI Design Explorer - Publication / Yearbook - Out now. The best design resource of 2021.
It's been four years, and UNI has grown to be one of a kind creative engine around the web-driven by the most outstanding architecture creators from around the world. The platform by its design consciously crafts world-class design problems that not only drive thought but identify solutions that can be the next big discovery in architecture. A new outlook like this creates a never seen before space for the emerging generation of this industry that no one's talking about. Which dawned upon us why not put a spotlight on this?
While our education embraces the architectural marvels of the past, UNI believes that the next generation of architecture will be written by these ideas that by no means resemble the solutions that we have seen in the previous century.
Shocked? Let me explain.
Well, it's true the methods of construction, spaces, order and forms are the fundamentals of architecture history that unarguably drives the building envelope. The question however has entirely changed. The biggest shift our industry is facing now is the layer of social-economic-ecological context changing drastically over the past few years.
Some of these changed contextual positions look like:
1. How architecture now has to take active participation while negotiating for the marginalized and people/creatures who can't purchase a stake yet hold an important position in our planet by their existence.
2. How mass media has drawn in this new unstructured awareness amongst our clients and their ability to appreciate architecture in a completely different way.
3. The way design creation as a process has become really fast due to various computer applications which can lead to faster answer finding and prototyping.
4. How architecture holds a more prominent position towards global warming and use of sustainable techniques for building a better planet through taking all of the above.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Let us see these changes as opportunities to find new relationships to relevance with the world of today. A world where architecture changes from a closed-door exclusive profession to now being an active contributor - available for service while enduring these landslide changes. From shaping temporary environments for refugee habitats, to being a relevant contributor in outer space exploration - our expanse is far beyond today's age and will continue to be larger. At UNI we try to address this changing relationship with problems that are rooted in the times of today and can be something that can help us prepare for these transformations in the coming decades. And Series 3 of UNI Design Explorer is an important juncture in that path to commemorate the best of the best we happened to come across this year in the decades-long journey in front of us.
The goal of Uni Design Explorer is to provide this vast and unparalleled diversity of examples to curious designers and learners from fields like architecture, product design, graphic design, fashion and many more to come on a common platform. This book does not stop at the most outstanding projects that came our way. It builds on the exceptional processes that go under the hood to make them happen.
It documents the most emerging architects who proved their design mettle by competing in various challenges globally across relevant design briefs in the context of today.
With every passing year and in its 3rd Series, we upgrade some elements of the book series to make it more useful for our readers and contributors that making it the world standard design resource that one simply can't miss.
And like every time, we heard your feedback and learnt more about what should be in this book that can make this more useful for you. This year particularly has been some huge changes, out of which the most important ones are:
1. The New Name
We renamed the book series to UNI Design Explorer from
UNI Design Yearbook 2021. It meant that design is timeless as it should be. We realized instead of an year by year compilation that loses relevance over time - It felt more right to drop the years from the name and align to the idea of building over the past.
2. In their own words
We spoke to our creators to contribute significant parts of the yearbook which is 100% unique to this version - Not available in any other formats or web.
3. Every project featured
We covered almost every project that made into the hall of fame on UNI. Despite the number of projects we went ahead to publish every winning project to give a more holistic view of design caliber found on UNI.
4. Digital Physical Connect
We brought in QR codes for all of these projects that give you detailed access to full project details on the website. While internet is distracting and books offer focus, this mixed medium brings in best of both worlds.
5. Volumizing
We bifurcated the book into parts to keep the pricing in check at the same time, and making it more towards - 'buy what you need' model.
These 6 volumes of Uni Design Explorer introduces you to a publication with beautifully illustrated presentation boards, providing a compelling visual story alongside the invaluable information with detailed descriptions. It imparts technical insight into the design processes through individual journeys across a multitude of design problems.
Across 200 pages in each volume, the book series showcases 40+ competitions with the most innovative and inspiring projects of we received in our past year. It has been designed to offer readers complete, comprehensive, and most importantly - relevant, architectural design ideas.
