Floating Swimming Pool Architecture: Reinventing the Seine with Mater Studio
A pioneering example of floating swimming pool architecture reconnecting Parisians with the Seine through adaptive, sustainable, and culturally rooted design.
A Revolutionary Open-Air Swimming Experience in Paris
The Seine Open-Air Swimming Site, designed by Mater Studio, is a remarkable milestone in floating swimming pool architecture. Situated in the heart of Paris, this innovative, seasonal, and fully demountable structure is more than a recreational facility—it is a bold reimagining of how architecture, urban life, and nature can coexist on water.

Built after a 100-year prohibition on swimming in the Seine, the site reopens a chapter in Parisian public life, offering citizens a refreshing and poetic encounter with their river. With a footprint of 480 m² on land and 415 m² of floating structures, the project was developed to be adaptable, respectful of its historical and natural context, and capable of being dismantled within 48 hours.
A Bold Architectural Gesture on the River Seine
Floating effortlessly at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, the swimming site engages with the city’s iconic silhouette while retaining a modest profile. Unlike conventional sports facilities, this project did not seek visual dominance. Instead, it introduced a new architectural dialogue—where structure, water, and heritage harmonize.

The yellow railings and decorative metalwork take cues from the Art Deco movement of the 1920s, paying homage to the golden age of public swimming in Paris. These visual elements root the design in a collective memory of leisure and cultural identity. Bright yellow and blue tones, once symbols of summer joy, are revived to encourage a new ritual: swimming in the Seine.
Architecture That Reassures the Body and Stimulates the Mind
What sets this example of floating swimming pool architecture apart is its ability to engage people not only physically but psychologically. To address potential apprehension around open water, the design gently guides users into the experience. Progressive water depths, shaded relaxation zones, and even a shallow pool for children ease people into the river with care and intention.

Key design features, like the island-like floating platform, create a magnetic allure. Swimmers instinctively want to reach it, climb on it, and use it as a place of rest and social interaction. Despite complex technical and regulatory hurdles, this modest addition became central to the project’s emotional success.

Innovation in Mobility and Modularity
The swimming site’s modular nature is a triumph of design and engineering. The floating platform rides on vertical rails fixed to the quay, allowing it to adapt to fluctuating water levels with ease. Two 25-meter pivoting walkways ensure gentle, universally accessible slopes. Every element is modular, coded, and designed for rapid assembly and disassembly.

This precision allows the entire site to be removed within 48 hours in response to emergencies like flash floods. In normal conditions, it can be dismantled and reinstalled seasonally with remarkable efficiency. It's architecture as kinetic system—a Meccano set for the urban waterfront.

A Sustainable and Thoughtful Material Palette
Environmental consideration played a key role in the selection of materials. The team reused globally travelled shipping containers to house land-based facilities and chose robinia wood, a European hardwood that naturally resists moisture without chemical treatment, for structural and surface elements. These decisions reflect a low-impact approach while maintaining durability and visual warmth.

Even more impressive is how this technically sophisticated installation appears simple and inviting. The visible ease of use and visual elegance belie the complex systems working underneath—demonstrating that in floating swimming pool architecture, real success lies in making complexity feel effortless.

Reviving Urban Rivers Through Architecture
Perhaps the most powerful aspect of the Seine Open-Air Swimming Site is its ability to change perception. By placing the act of swimming—once banned and unthinkable—back into the heart of urban life, the project restores the Seine not just as a scenic backdrop, but as a living, interactive space.
