Folio Bridge: Redefining Structural Design and Spatial Experience by FAR WORKSHOP

The Folio Bridge, designed by FAR WORKSHOP, stands as a testament to the convergence of architectural ingenuity and artistic imagination. Located in Huzhou, China, this pedestrian bridge is one of the winners of the prestigious 2022 Seven Bridges International Competition. Inspired by the Elegance of Paper

The conceptual foundation of the Folio Bridge lies in the simplicity of an A4 sheet of paper. The designers drew inspiration from the mechanical potential of folded paper, exploring how a series of creases can transform fragility into structural strength. This vision materialized into a bridge where a single crease achieves the span, marrying elegance with functionality.

In collaboration with Zhang Zhun's Structural Research Institute, FAR WORKSHOP meticulously modeled the bridge's unique form. By adjusting three construction curves and a strategic construction point, the design team optimized the distribution of forces to create a visually striking yet mechanically sound structure.

The steep, undulating slope of the bridge body adds a sculptural dimension to its function. This bold design choice eliminates the possibility of a flat pedestrian path, instead creating a dynamic ascent reminiscent of traversing a mountain. A slender stepping path, composed of high-strength threaded steel bars, guides users along the bridge, evoking the feeling of walking on a natural mountain trail.

These pieces were then welded into a cohesive structure with the help of a pre-made positioning frame.

The slender steel bar pathway, integral to the bridge's functionality, was installed later to ensure a harmonious integration of form and purpose. To verify its structural integrity, the bridge underwent a rigorous load test before it opened to the public, affirming the precision and care invested in its creation.
