Folio Bridge: Redefining Structural Design and Spatial Experience by FAR WORKSHOP

The Folio Bridge, designed by FAR WORKSHOP, stands as a testament to the convergence of architectural ingenuity and artistic imagination. Located in Huzhou, China, this pedestrian bridge is one of the winners of the prestigious 2022 Seven Bridges International Competition. Completed in 2024, the structure embodies a poetic blend of minimalism, structural experimentation, and functional aesthetics, offering a transformative experience for its users and the surrounding landscape.





Inspired by the Elegance of Paper
The conceptual foundation of the Folio Bridge lies in the simplicity of an A4 sheet of paper. The designers drew inspiration from the mechanical potential of folded paper, exploring how a series of creases can transform fragility into structural strength. This vision materialized into a bridge where a single crease achieves the span, marrying elegance with functionality.


In collaboration with Zhang Zhun's Structural Research Institute, FAR WORKSHOP meticulously modeled the bridge's unique form. By adjusting three construction curves and a strategic construction point, the design team optimized the distribution of forces to create a visually striking yet mechanically sound structure.



A Bridge that Evokes a Mountain Path
The steep, undulating slope of the bridge body adds a sculptural dimension to its function. This bold design choice eliminates the possibility of a flat pedestrian path, instead creating a dynamic ascent reminiscent of traversing a mountain. A slender stepping path, composed of high-strength threaded steel bars, guides users along the bridge, evoking the feeling of walking on a natural mountain trail.



This deliberate contrast between the thinness of the bridge's surface and the robustness of its form underscores the project's conceptual duality. The bridge’s profile resembles a mountain on one hand and a delicate sheet of paper on the other, blending massiveness and lightness in a seamless dialogue.


Innovative Construction Techniques
Spanning 15.825 meters, the Folio Bridge is a feat of advanced construction and craftsmanship. The complex curves of its design required a bespoke approach, with steel plates manually bent and adjusted using press machines. These pieces were then welded into a cohesive structure with the help of a pre-made positioning frame.


The slender steel bar pathway, integral to the bridge's functionality, was installed later to ensure a harmonious integration of form and purpose. To verify its structural integrity, the bridge underwent a rigorous load test before it opened to the public, affirming the precision and care invested in its creation.

The Folio Bridge is more than just a crossing; it is a sensory experience. The sharp contrast between the massive appearance of the folded steel and the delicate stepping path challenges conventional perceptions of scale and materiality.
