Gathering Grove Residence by R+R Architects
A biophilic retreat blending modern luxury and Zen calm, Gathering Grove Residence unites nature, light, and architecture for soulful gatherings.
A Sanctuary of Connection and Celebration
The Gathering Grove Residence by R+R Architects redefines the idea of a leisure retreat through architecture that celebrates community, nature, and contemporary luxury. Designed for a Los Angeles–based client with a passion for hosting and entertainment, the project transforms a typical outhouse into a vibrant, immersive social hub.

Every design gesture reflects the client’s exuberant personality — playful, elegant, and expressive. The result is not a mere extension of the home, but a curated enclave of joy and connection, where architecture becomes a stage for shared experiences.

Architecture Inspired by Nature and Stillness
At the heart of the project stands a preserved tree, rising gracefully through a circular roof opening — a living symbol of balance and renewal. This natural anchor embodies the project’s biophilic and Zen-inspired design philosophy, where built form and nature coexist harmoniously.

A surrounding raked sand garden enhances the meditative quality of the space, evoking the quiet rhythm of Japanese Zen landscapes. Organic curves, rounded glazing, and earthen materials like stone and timber blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Light filters through expansive glass panels, illuminating serene interiors grounded in warmth and texture.

In this interplay of nature and design, ornamentation gives way to authenticity — creating a timeless sanctuary that radiates both vibrancy and calm.

Contextual Design Rooted in Place
The architectural narrative evolved through an intimate dialogue with its context and climate. Ahmedabad’s sun-drenched setting inspired the use of breathable materials, textured surfaces, and shaded transitions that respond to both heat and humidity.

Drawing from regional craftsmanship and cultural motifs, R+R Architects infused the design with authenticity and precision. Each choice — from local stone finishes to artisanal detailing — connects the home to its cultural and environmental fabric.

Interior Design: Sculptural Elegance Meets Tactile Warmth
Inside, the Gathering Grove Residence unfolds like a gallery of contrasts — where natural tactility meets refined opulence. A sculptural stone bar and floating stairway act as visual anchors, balanced by jewel-toned furniture, gilded lighting, and subtle curves that invite movement.

The interiors blend modern minimalism with sensorial richness. Marble and stone surfaces reflect the light, timber softens the atmosphere, and ambient lighting highlights the material interplay. The result is a spatial symphony — dynamic yet serene, expressive yet balanced.

The Dining Space: Geometry and Grace
The dining area captures the home’s essence — a fluid composition of form, material, and light. Circular motifs and sculptural lighting define the space, while the tactile wood table contrasts beautifully with the dark marble backdrop.
This room becomes more than a place to eat; it is a space for gathering, reflection, and conversation, crafted with restraint and intention. Every detail contributes to an atmosphere of intimacy and sophistication.

Smart Spatial Planning and Design Innovation
Beyond aesthetics, the residence is shaped by strategic spatial planning. Multi-functional furniture supports flexibility for gatherings of varying scales, while concealed storage maintains visual clarity.
Lighting design acts as an architectural tool — sculpting mood, emphasizing textures, and guiding flow. Smart home systems enhance user comfort, while zoning creates distinct yet interconnected spaces. Challenges in balancing the client’s vision with practical constraints sparked creative innovation, proving that design excellence thrives in negotiation between ambition and realism.

Material Palette: A Dialogue of Contrast and Harmony
Materiality anchors the residence in emotional and sensory richness. Raw stone provides grounding; polished marble adds sophistication; timber infuses warmth; and glass offers openness.
Accents of brass and muted metallics lend understated glamour, while soft furnishings introduce comfort. The color palette oscillates between earthy neutrals and bold tones — mustard, teal, and powder blue — evoking freshness while staying rooted in nature’s harmony.
Together, these elements create an environment where material, light, and emotion coalesce — a testament to R+R Architects’ mastery of sensorial storytelling.

A Poetic Balance Between Architecture and Nature
Gathering Grove Residence is more than a luxurious space; it is a living, breathing sanctuary where architecture and nature engage in poetic dialogue. Sculptural yet grounded, vibrant yet meditative, it transforms everyday moments into acts of connection and mindfulness.
