A Context-Driven, Nature-Integrated School for 21st-Century Learning

Located in the heart of Gradignan, a town in south-western France near Bordeaux, the Gradignan School complex exemplifies a contemporary approach to educational architecture deeply rooted in its local context. Designed by Ateliers Mathieu Laporte in collaboration with Fagart & Fontana, the project forms part of the city’s long-standing vision as a “park city”, where urban life is structured around a network of green spaces.

Set at the intersection of the Parc du Repos Maternelle and a newly developed residential neighborhood, the 3,700-square-meter school complex serves both nursery and primary education, while also acting as a community anchor. Conceived at a child’s scale, the architecture blends landscape integration, pedagogical ambition, and sustainable construction, offering a welcoming environment for everyday learning and shared civic life.

Architecture Rooted in Landscape and Memory

Gradignan’s identity—shaped over decades by parks and natural corridors—forms the conceptual foundation of the project. The school integrates seamlessly into its surroundings through two large intersecting zinc roofs, whose generous overhangs provide shelter and continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces. This strong horizontal gesture recalls traditional, low-lying constructions, creating an architecture that feels familiar, protective, and legible, particularly suited to the world of childhood.

The building’s calm and recognizable silhouette establishes a constant dialogue with the surrounding landscape, reinforcing a sense of belonging and place while maintaining a contemporary architectural expression.

Clear Organization and Intuitive Circulation

The spatial organization is structured around the two complementary roofs. A long, low roof extends along Avenue Charles-et-Émile-Lestage, housing the nursery school and following the natural depth of the site. Perpendicular to it, a higher roof volume connects the residential neighborhood to the park and accommodates the primary school classrooms along with a multipurpose hall.

Three clearly defined entrances, comfortably sheltered beneath deep roof overhangs, ensure intuitive access for children, teachers, and visitors. The multipurpose hall, accessible outside school hours, reinforces the school’s role as a shared neighborhood facility, supporting cultural and social activities beyond the academic calendar.

Nature as an Everyday Learning Environment

Landscape design by Bassinet Turquin Paysage extends the park directly into the school grounds. Existing trees are carefully preserved, planted swales define site boundaries, and the natural topography is respected to protect local ecosystems. The landscape reaches right up to the façades, blurring the boundary between architecture and nature.

Two playgrounds are shaped within this green continuity, each tailored to different age groups and activities. A teaching garden, irrigated by rainwater collected from the roofs, further enriches the educational experience, transforming outdoor space into a hands-on learning tool and reinforcing environmental awareness from an early age.

Sustainable Construction and Long-Term Performance

Designed as a durable piece of public infrastructure, the Gradignan School reflects a forward-looking approach to sustainability and efficiency. The project employs a hybrid construction system, combining prefabricated modules with off-site assembled elements. This strategy ensures quality control, cost efficiency, and adherence to construction timelines while minimizing environmental impact.

A restrained palette of wood, steel, aluminium, and timber provides warmth, robustness, and ease of maintenance. Acoustic design by Cabinet Conseil Vincent Hedont and engineering by CETAB further enhance comfort and functionality, supporting focused learning environments throughout the school.

A School for Today and Tomorrow

Open to nature, anchored in its community, and designed around clarity, flexibility, and care, the Gradignan School complex embodies a 21st-century educational vision. It is a place where architecture, landscape, and pedagogy converge—offering children a protective, poetic, and sustainable environment in which to grow, learn, and imagine the future.
