Graneros House: Modern Country Residence by Juan Carlos Sabbagh Arquitectos in Rancagua, ChileW23
Graneros House by Juan Carlos Sabbagh Arquitectos is a modern country residence in Chile, blending indoor-outdoor living, natural light, and family-focused design.
Graneros House, designed by Juan Carlos Sabbagh Arquitectos, is a striking example of contemporary country living in Rancagua, Chile. Built on the site of a family home occupied for 35 years, the project embraces the surrounding landscape while creating a definitive residence that balances privacy, openness, and family-oriented functionality. The expansive property is framed by a carefully curated park, including stables, pens, reflective water features, a swimming pool, and a dedicated barbecue area, ensuring the architecture is fully integrated with its natural context.

The house was designed to accommodate a large family, with generous halls, open-plan common areas, and a seamless connection to the outdoors. Large windows, glass walls, and strategic circulation paths ensure that natural light floods the interiors and that panoramic views of the park are accessible from nearly every space. Only private areas, such as bedrooms, bathrooms, and the kitchen, are enclosed, while living areas remain open, fostering a sense of continuity with the exterior.

A glass envelope defines the house’s transparency, reflecting the surrounding trees while dark wood interiors blend into the park. The design emphasizes visual and physical connections between interior and exterior, encouraging an immersive experience of the landscape.
The residence is organized along orthogonal axes aligned with cardinal directions to maximize key views: the Andes Mountains to the east, the Coastal Mountains to the west, the pool and barbecue area to the north, and stables to the south. The lower floor accommodates communal areas, the kitchen, and the master bedroom, while the upper floor houses guest and children’s bedrooms, each with private balconies that expand into the park.

At the heart of the home, a double-height patio structures the spatial layout, bringing light into the center of the house and creating dynamic three-dimensional visual connections across rooms and levels. Bridges linking upper-level bedrooms provide additional viewpoints and reinforce the dialogue between interior spaces and the park.

Graneros House exemplifies modern residential architecture that celebrates transparency, natural light, and the integration of indoor and outdoor living. It is a thoughtfully designed family home that harmonizes contemporary design with the Chilean countryside.
