What happens when the office ceases to be a building and becomes terrain? Groundwork: The Unbuilt Office answers that question by flattening the hierarchy between workspace and park, replacing the static floor plate with an undulating landscape threaded with glass roofs, water features, and tree clusters. The proposal operates on a simple provocation: if work has already escaped the cubicle (and increasingly the building itself), then architecture should stop pretending it hasn't. Instead of enclosing productivity, the design opens it to daylight, soil, and community, creating a continuous ground plane that shifts function throughout the day.

The project is the work of Srishti Jauhri, Flora Rao, Venkatesh Senguttuvan, and Subham Jain. Situated within the green urban fabric of Singapore, the scheme proposes a carbon-conscious modular system that minimizes construction footprints while maximizing usability. Its ambition is global: a universally adaptable model for future workspaces that serves not just office workers but entire neighborhoods, operating as park in the morning, workspace during the day, and communal gathering area at night.

Three Principles on One Diagram

The conceptual diagram above distills Groundwork into three design principles: Office on the Grass, which reunites workspaces with the natural environment; Interdisciplinary Interaction, which engineers spatial overlaps between professions; and Global Community, which frames the whole system as a repeatable, adaptable model rather than a one-off landmark. What makes this framework compelling is its refusal to treat nature as mere amenity. Green space is not bolted onto the office; it is the office. A Canopy That Breathes with the Public Realm

Organic Site Geometry and the Central Pool

The site plan makes the landscape strategy legible. Organic patches of planting, tree clusters, and green beds surround a central pool, while glass roof openings are strategically placed to maintain visual and climatic continuity between interior and exterior. Water bodies serve both aesthetic and microclimatic functions, cooling the surrounding air in Singapore's tropical heat and creating acoustic separation between activity zones. Circulation paths weave through the patches rather than cutting across them, encouraging spontaneous encounters between users of different disciplines. There are no corridors here, only landscape sequences.

Cutting into the Slope: Section as Proof of Concept

The axonometric drawing paired with section diagrams is the most technically revealing image in the set. It shows how the building embeds itself into sloping terrain, using the grade change to tuck program beneath the landscape surface while keeping the ground plane continuous and publicly accessible. Water cascades along the section, reinforcing the idea that natural systems run through the architecture rather than around it. The section cuts also reveal the relationship between the transparent glass roof and the planted zones above, demonstrating how natural light penetrates deep into work areas while green patches insulate the structure beneath. Carbon-conscious construction logic is implicit in the compactness of the built volume relative to the expansive landscape it supports.

Why This Project Matters

Groundwork takes a familiar conversation about the future of work and gives it genuine architectural consequence. Many speculative office projects default to rendering sleek interiors with token planting; this one inverts the ratio, making landscape the dominant system and architecture its quiet infrastructure. The result is a workspace that doesn't just accommodate flexibility but demands it, dissolving the programmatic certainty that has defined office design for a century.

What Jauhri, Rao, Senguttuvan, and Jain propose is not without risk. A building that transforms from park to office to event venue in a single day requires governance frameworks, maintenance regimes, and user cultures that do not yet exist at scale. But that is precisely the value of speculative work: it identifies the spatial conditions under which new social contracts might emerge. Groundwork makes a persuasive case that the next office will not be a building at all but a managed ecology, one where productivity and well-being are measured in canopy cover as much as square footage.
