Haksanjae Private Library and Residence: A Modern Interpretation of Traditional Korean Architecture
An architectural retreat blending traditional Korean architecture with modern design, Haksanjae offers a private library, residence, and cultural sanctuary in nature.
The Haksanjae Private Library and Residence, designed by CHAWOOCHAWOO in Gangneung-si, South Korea, redefines how traditional Korean architecture principles can merge with contemporary living. Completed in 2024, the project balances intellectual pursuit, residential comfort, and cultural heritage within a secluded natural setting.

A Library for Knowledge and Contemplation
At the heart of the project is Sarangchae, a dedicated library designed to house 10,000 volumes. This space prioritizes protection for books, with windows limited to the north façade and skylights to reduce sun damage. Its high ceilings enhance a sense of openness, while carefully integrated stair seating invites pauses for reading and reflection.

The library is not just a storage space but a sanctuary for intellectual work, including writing and lecturing. Its thoughtful design ensures that the presence of books feels monumental yet welcoming.

Traditional Korean Spatial Philosophy
The project’s dual configuration consists of Sarangchae (library) and Anchae (residence), two distinct structures inspired by Hanok architecture. Following tradition, these volumes are separated, emphasizing privacy and respect. This spatial division requires residents to step outdoors between spaces, encouraging connection to natural rhythms and seasonal changes.

The inward-facing courtyard, framed by retaining walls and mountain views, creates a protected yet open atmosphere that enhances calmness and focus.

Residential Comfort Rooted in Hanok Design
The Anchae residence incorporates traditional features like a daecheong (semi-outdoor hall) to enhance ventilation and natural lighting. This transitional zone between living areas and the bedroom ensures airflow while protecting privacy despite the open surroundings.

A continuous toenmaru (narrow wooden veranda) lines the eastern façade, offering contemplative views of the mountains. Red corrugated steel cladding references the client’s former home, blending nostalgia with modernity.

Architecture in Dialogue with Nature
Both Sarangchae and Anchae embrace their landscape setting. By orienting spaces inward yet maintaining views of the mountains, Haksanjae demonstrates how architecture can frame nature without being intrusive. The project’s muted concrete tones, natural light strategies, and warm wooden interiors amplify the harmony between structure and environment.

A Contemporary Retreat with Cultural Resonance
Designed for a retired history professor, Haksanjae is more than a library and home—it is a retreat that reflects a lifetime of intellectual pursuit and cultural appreciation. By integrating traditional Korean architecture principles into a modern framework, CHAWOOCHAWOO has created a timeless space where heritage and contemporary life coexist seamlessly.

The Haksanjae Private Library and Residence illustrates the enduring relevance of traditional Korean architecture in today’s world. It balances solitude with openness, scholarship with relaxation, and tradition with modernity. This project proves that architecture, when rooted in cultural depth, can transcend time and offer spaces that enrich both daily life and spiritual well-being.
