Han Pao‐Teh Memorial Museum by KRIS YAO | ARTECH
The Han Pao‐Teh Memorial Museum by KRIS YAO | ARTECH honors Taiwan’s architectural pioneer with striking geometric design and immersive exhibition spaces.
The Han Pao‐Teh Memorial Museum, designed by KRIS YAO | ARTECH, stands as a monumental tribute to one of Taiwan’s most influential modern architectural theorists, Han Pao‐Teh (1934–2014). Situated on the campus of Tainan University of the Arts, a pioneering institution founded by Han himself, the museum celebrates his legacy in architecture, education, and the arts. The project seamlessly merges exhibition spaces with teaching areas, embodying Han’s philosophy that museums are not just for display but for immersive learning.

Architectural Concept
The museum’s design is inspired by the principle of “a cube within a cube”, a simple yet powerful geometric configuration that conveys profound symbolic meanings. The collision of the two cubes reflects Han Pao‐Teh’s multifaceted knowledge, while the robust architectural concrete signifies his indomitable spirit.
Visitors ascend from the reflective pool via a low-rise staircase, entering a 13.5-meter tall main exhibition space. A dramatic floating cubic mass, housing the Han Pao‐Teh Permanent Exhibition Room, intrudes into this space like a suspended auditorium. Its rotated form splits walls to welcome natural light, creating a striking interplay of light and shadow, enhancing the theatrical atmosphere of the interior.

Spatial Experience
The museum’s interior and exterior are connected through a large window framing lush greenery and a theatrical staircase that spirals counterclockwise, guiding visitors on a reflective journey. The ascending path leads to a narrow, gorge-like corridor, culminating at the top level where the permanent exhibition resides. This circulation design mirrors the educational journey, encouraging visitors to explore, reflect, and engage with Han Pao‐Teh’s vision.

Cultural Significance
This memorial honors Han Pao‐Teh’s remarkable contributions to Taiwanese architecture and cultural education. Beyond his role as a pioneering architect, Han was a mentor to Kris Yao, influencing generations of architects. Commissioned in 2015 by Han’s family, the museum not only preserves his collections but also reinforces his lasting impact on architectural education and creative practice in Taiwan.
