Healing Pets: A Pet-Friendly Community Hub by Informal Design in Hangzhou
Healing Pets by Informal Design transforms a former factory into a pet-friendly, natural, and flexible community space fostering human-pet connections.
Healing Pets by Informal Design transforms a former toy factory in Hangzhou’s West Lane Cultural and Creative Park into a vibrant, multi-functional community space for pets and their owners. Rooted in the philosophy of fostering human-pet connections, the design creates a welcoming environment that promotes interaction, leisure, and a shared urban lifestyle for both residents and their pets.

Merging Old and New for Fluid Spatial Experience
The design carefully preserves the industrial heritage of the building while introducing contemporary interventions. By exposing the original roof structure and integrating new volumes, the architects created a dynamic interplay between old and new, resulting in a fluid, open layout. This approach honors the building’s history while enhancing its spatial functionality and visual appeal, aligning with sustainable design principles and adaptive reuse strategies.

Embracing Natural Materials and Textures
Healing Pets employs a palette of natural materials to foster a warm, inviting, and tactile environment. Washed stone, gravel concrete, textured paint, marine plywood, and granite cubes are thoughtfully juxtaposed throughout the interiors. The rough washed stone surfaces, used for bar counters, seating, and flooring, ensure durability, slip resistance, and a tactile connection with nature, benefiting both pets and humans.
The gravel concrete floors and gray-washed walls amplify the outdoor-inspired ambiance, while marine plywood panels in furniture and retail displays add warmth and flexibility. Over time, the natural weathering of these materials further enriches the space, creating a continuously evolving texture that strengthens the connection between the built environment and its users.

A Strong Pet-Centered Brand Identity
Informal Design integrated a complete brand identity into the architectural experience. The pet-friendly ramp acts as a functional and visual icon, reinforcing the playful and approachable brand image. Three-dimensional graphic elements and spatially integrated symbols communicate the brand’s personality, while pet-sensitive colors like blue and yellow add a modern, lighthearted touch.
Strategically designed signage, interactive graphics, and installations guide visitors through the space, including a pet map at the entrance, cleverly arranged door handles, and visible business hour displays. This holistic approach merges branding with functionality, creating a cohesive, engaging, and memorable visitor experience.

Thoughtful Spatial Layout
The 300 m² space is organized into three primary zones:
- Entrance Café: Acting as a landscaped courtyard, the café blurs the boundary between interior and exterior. A semi-enclosed entrance features a large tree surrounded by washed stones, generating a natural, lively atmosphere that energizes pets and visitors alike.
- Activity Area: Centrally located, this zone retains the original spatial structure and features ramps connecting first- and second-floor activity spaces. Park-style seating and open circulation encourage playful interactions, while abundant natural light creates a dynamic play of shadows throughout the day.
- Functional Area: The rear section houses the pet hotel, grooming rooms, office spaces, and a pet photography studio. Modular capacitive glass partitions offer visual transparency and flexibility, while elevated office areas provide panoramic oversight of the entire space for efficient management.

Pet-Friendly, Flexible Interiors
Every element of Healing Pets is designed with animal welfare and user comfort in mind. Furniture and seating arrangements provide secure, sheltered spaces for small animals, while suspended benches and movable furniture create unobstructed play zones. Small tables designed with leash anchors allow owners to relax and socialize hands-free. Pegboards double as retail displays and decorative accents, emphasizing adaptability and functionality.
Healing Pets exemplifies a thoughtful integration of adaptive reuse, sustainable materials, and pet-friendly design principles. By combining a strong brand identity, natural textures, and flexible interiors, Informal Design has created a vibrant hub that nurtures human-pet interactions and enhances urban life in Hangzhou.
