Located on the fifth and sixth floors of a compact six-story building in Shibuya City, Hoth Photo Studio by SPEC Architects is a versatile creative space designed for seasonal apparel shoots, e-commerce product photography, and exhibitions. Completed in 2023, this 82 m² photography studio combines minimalism with sculptural design elements, catering to photographers, models, and art directors seeking a flexible and inspiring environment.

The studio’s design prioritizes functionality and visual simplicity. Plain white walls, natural wooden panels, white ceilings, and smooth concrete floors dominate the interiors, offering a neutral backdrop essential for fashion shoots and product photography. Despite the simplicity, SPEC transformed the space into a unique visual experience through carefully crafted design features.

On the fifth floor, a concrete staircase and elevator box serve as a central sculptural element. The staircase is polished to reveal encapsulated gravel, creating a tactile, organic texture that contrasts elegantly with the clean white walls. This irregular stonework staircase is more than a functional structure—it acts as a dynamic photo backdrop, enhancing the presentation of clothing, shoes, and models.

The sixth floor presented a challenge with its flat layout, creating unused “dead space.” Instead of conventional storage, SPEC installed a distorted mirrored glass panel extending to the full 4.4-meter ceiling. This reflective surface produces striking visual effects, adding depth, dimension, and creativity to photographic compositions. The mirrors encourage photographers and art directors to experiment, turning ordinary shoots into imaginative, one-of-a-kind visuals.

Lighting was meticulously considered, with K LIGHT STUDIO designing solutions that highlight the studio’s textures and sculptural elements. High-quality materials from 3M and Carl Hansen & Son enhance the space’s aesthetic and functional performance. Lead architect Motoki Ishii emphasized the importance of creating a studio environment that stimulates creativity while remaining adaptable to diverse photographic needs.
