House FC in Taipei: A Poetic Approach to Small Apartment Interior Design by fws_work
This article explores a poetic and light-filled small apartment interior design in Taipei by fws_work for an artist client.
Creating Tranquility in a 65m² Urban Residence
In the dense urban fabric of Taipei, House FC by fws_work offers a quiet yet powerful example of small apartment interior design. Designed for an artist client seeking inspiration and calm in equal measure, this 65 m² apartment embodies spatial poetry, tactile minimalism, and a masterful handling of light and material. Completed in 2024, the renovation transforms a compact footprint into a layered environment where each step reveals a carefully composed scene.

One Step, One Scene: Designing for Poetic Daily Life
The design philosophy behind House FC is rooted in the idea that "one step at a moment creates a scene." This conceptual framework guides the spatial choreography of the home, turning everyday movement into a narrative experience. Each space is not merely functional but intentionally crafted to offer a moment of reflection. From the entryway to the sleeping loft, every view, transition, and threshold has been treated as a vignette—capturing shifting light, seasonal changes, and the gentle flow of daily life.

This artistic approach to small apartment interior design results in a home that feels both intimate and expansive, despite its limited size.

Light, Shadow, and Connection to Nature
A central strategy of the renovation was to harness natural light. The designers took advantage of the apartment’s high ceiling and large windows to bring in abundant daylight. The interplay of light and shadow, enhanced by strategically placed openings in the walls, transforms the modest interior into a dynamic and evolving environment.

These apertures not only open up previously confined areas—such as the staircase and the compact bedroom—but also create a seamless visual relationship between interior and exterior. Foliage from outside becomes part of the interior composition, and changing light conditions throughout the day add rhythm and life to the stillness of the materials.

Material Warmth and Tactile Simplicity
House FC's material palette enhances the home's emotional and sensory experience. Dark plaster walls and solid wood form a richly atmospheric backdrop that contrasts beautifully with filtered daylight. Handmade bricks clad the staircase, adding texture and a nostalgic touch that grounds the space in memory and craftsmanship.

The original stone tile flooring was preserved, honoring the apartment’s history while contributing to the overall material harmony. In the tea room, woven rattan folding doors replace traditional partitions, allowing light and air to pass while creating a soft boundary between spaces. These carefully chosen textures and finishes evoke a quiet serenity, reinforcing the apartment’s meditative ambiance.

Spatial Economy with Emotional Depth
In rethinking the space, fws_work has achieved an essential goal of small apartment interior design: making less feel like more. Through thoughtful spatial planning, layered materials, and an embrace of slow living, the compact home avoids the pitfalls of over-designed micro-apartments. Instead, it invites calm, reflection, and creativity.

The design demonstrates that a small footprint need not constrain emotion or imagination. In fact, constraint becomes a canvas—one where every gesture counts and every material speaks. House FC becomes not just a home, but a spatial poem composed with care and clarity.

A New Model for Urban Living in Taiwan
House FC stands as a meaningful contribution to Taipei’s architectural landscape and a model for contemporary urban living. It shows that even in dense, high-pressure cities, small apartment interior design can nurture a sense of calm, beauty, and individuality.
By treating each space as a scene and every surface as a canvas, fws_work elevates the domestic environment into an experience of lived art. House FC does not merely solve a spatial problem—it tells a quiet, unfolding story of how we live, breathe, and create meaning in small spaces.
