House in Dobra by Maxberg – Contemporary Barn-Inspired Home in the Polish Countryside

Nestled on the edge of a lush forest in Dobra, Poland, the House in Dobra by Maxberg is a striking example of contemporary rural architecture. Designed in 2018 and spanning 270 square meters, this residence merges vernacular barn forms with modern detailing, responding to strict planning guidelines while embracing the site’s natural beauty.


Navigating Restrictions to Create a Unique Home
The project’s design was shaped by numerous construction restrictions, zoning laws, and environmental preservation rules. The owner envisioned a single-story house, but the development line—set 12 meters from the property boundary—made it impossible to fit the desired layout on a single plot. The solution was to purchase two adjacent plots, one with direct access to the forest.
Additional limitations, including a narrow maximum front façade width of 18 meters and a small allowable building footprint, led the architects to design a basement garage. This decision maximized living space above ground while maintaining the home’s low-profile rural character.

Site-Sensitive Orientation and Access
The garage driveway and main entrance were carefully placed to avoid removing mature roadside trees. There was only one viable access point from the road that preserved these valuable natural elements, reinforcing the project’s commitment to sustainable site integration.


A Dual-Barn Concept for Clear Zoning
The house is composed of two barn-like volumes positioned perpendicular to each other. This layout clearly separates the daytime living areas at the front from the private nighttime zones further inside.
In the living area, the high-pitched roof creates a spacious interior with ceilings parallel to the roof slopes, enhancing openness and natural light. Expansive glazing along the garden façade frames panoramic forest views, dissolving the boundary between interior and landscape.

Materiality and Minimal Detailing
The exterior blends hand-molded, non-glazed brick with vertical wooden slats, while the roof is clad in natural slate—materials chosen for their tactile quality, durability, and timeless aesthetic. Subtle detailing ensures a clean form: hidden gutters, no visible ventilation pipes, and grouped chimneys discreetly integrated into one location. This minimalist approach emphasizes the home’s pure geometry and elevates the natural finishes.


A Harmonious Dialogue Between Tradition and Modernity
The House in Dobra is more than a functional family home—it is a case study in contextual modern architecture. It respects local rural typologies, works within planning constraints, and embraces the surrounding landscape, all while delivering a refined and contemporary spatial experience.
