House in Vilnius by Architectural Bureau G. Natkevicius & Partners
A modern house in Vilnius, seamlessly blending architecture and nature with triangular forms, copper cladding, and forest-facing panoramic windows.
A Contemporary Retreat in the Heart of Lithuania
The House in Vilnius, designed by Architectural Bureau G. Natkevicius & Partners, is a striking example of modern residential architecture that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. Nestled at the edge of a pine forest in Vilnius, Lithuania, this 299 m² residence, completed in 2023, is a masterful response to its complex site conditions.

Site Challenges and Design Solutions
The site presents several challenges, with a busy road on one side, a neighbor’s house in close proximity, and a dense pine forest on the other. To ensure privacy and tranquility, the architects strategically designed the house to:
- Minimize exposure to road noise and headlights from passing cars.
- Create a buffer from the neighboring property by avoiding large windows or openings facing the adjacent house.
- Orient the living spaces towards the pine forest, maximizing scenic views and a connection to nature.

Innovative Architectural Form
The house’s distinctive triangular composition, clad in copper-profiled sheet metal, gives it a sculptural and dynamic presence. This angular form serves multiple purposes:
- One edge of the triangular volume shields the home from the neighbor’s property.
- The other "shrimp pincer" shape blocks noise and visual distractions from the street.
- The recessed central volume creates a covered terrace, enhancing indoor-outdoor living.

A Harmonious Interior Layout
Inside, the residence offers a spacious, light-filled environment designed for both comfort and functionality. The open-plan living room, framed by large aluminum windows, opens up to the forest, bringing in natural light while maintaining privacy. A floating spiral staircase, a key interior feature, elegantly connects the two levels, adding a sculptural focal point to the design.

A Home in Harmony with Nature
By prioritizing spatial orientation, materiality, and visual connectivity, the House in Vilnius creates a peaceful retreat that enhances its relationship with the surrounding landscape. The project is a testament to sustainable and context-driven architecture, offering a modern living experience immersed in nature.
