House-U by N.A.O – Flexible Living in Ninomiya, Japan
House-U by N.A.O in Ninomiya, Japan, features open flexible spaces, unaligned design, maximizing natural light and adaptable living.
House-U, designed by N.A.O and led by architect Naoki Kato, is a contemporary residential project located in Ninomiya, Japan. Completed in 2022 with a total area of 109 m², the house redefines spatial organization by focusing on flexibility, openness, and adaptability to its site conditions.

Context & Site Challenges
The project was designed on a deformed site with a noticeable height difference compared to neighboring land. One of the major challenges was ensuring adequate solar radiation and natural light penetration. To address this, the architects strategically placed the main living areas at a higher position to maximize daylight and create a comfortable, energy-efficient environment.

Design Concept – Unaligned Freedom
The central idea of House-U revolves around the principle of being “unaligned.” Unlike conventional designs that follow strict alignment and structural order, this residence embraces freedom in arrangement. By avoiding partitions and rigid layouts, the architects enabled a large, continuous open space where the client can freely adapt the interior according to evolving needs.
This approach challenges traditional rules of architecture—while alignment offers limited solutions, non-alignment opens endless possibilities. The result is a home that fosters creativity, adaptability, and fluid living.

Spatial Experience
The interiors, captured by Shinichi Hanaoka, showcase exposed beams, warm wooden textures, and minimalist furnishings. The open-plan design encourages a seamless flow between living, dining, and kitchen spaces, while built-in shelving and carefully placed furniture create functional yet flexible zones.
Large windows frame views of the outdoors while ensuring abundant natural light. The design emphasizes the relationship between people, objects, and space, making the house not just a shelter but a dynamic environment for everyday life.

Materials & Detailing
Manufacturers such as ABC Trading, DAINICHI GIKEN KOGYO, LIXIL, and Osmo & Edel Corporation contributed to the material palette, ensuring durability and a refined finish. The combination of exposed structural elements with soft interior details strikes a balance between raw authenticity and modern comfort.
House-U is more than a residence—it is a spatial experiment in flexibility and freedom. By rejecting rigid alignment and embracing open, adaptable spaces, N.A.O has created a house that grows with its inhabitants and adapts to their changing lifestyles.
