The July James Street Store, designed by In Addition, redefines retail experience in Brisbane’s vibrant Fortitude Valley. Set within the lush, tropical streetscape of the iconic James Street precinct, the 170 m² flagship is envisioned as a contemporary oasis where lifestyle, leisure, and design seamlessly converge. The project draws heavily from the breezy, outdoor culture that defines Brisbane, transforming these influences into a spatial experience that feels both luxurious and inviting.

Inspired by the evocative spirit of travel, the store channels the nostalgia and glamour found in the iconic poolside photography of Slim Aarons. July’s brand values—adventure, discovery, and effortless movement—are reflected throughout the interior, creating a space that feels like both a destination and a journey. The result is a richly layered retail environment that encourages visitors to explore, linger, and engage with the brand’s products in meaningful ways.

Materiality plays a central role in shaping this immersive experience. Cork paneling, solid timber detailing, and playful mid-century accents establish a warm, tactile foundation rooted in craftsmanship. These elements nod to the golden era of travel and reinforce July’s identity as a luxury Australian luggage brand. Soft color inflections and considered detailing invite customers to recall their own travel memories, subtly connecting personal experiences with the brand’s narrative.

A key design gesture is the dramatic shift in spatial volume, which draws customers deeper into the store. The changing ceiling heights and textured surfaces create a sense of discovery, encouraging interaction with July’s luggage and travel accessories. Central to the plan is a circular seating area—a moment of pause that allows shoppers to relax within the curated atmosphere. This zone is complemented by lush tropical landscaping by Acre, seamlessly extending the greenery of the James Street precinct indoors and enhancing the store’s oasis-like character.
